Cruiser Captain fired for cruelty

Captain H. Graf was relieved of command of the USS Cowpens (CG-63) on Jan 13th. Captain Graf was found guilty at Admirals Mast of violating article 93 UCMJ (cruelty and maltretment) and article 133 UCMJ (conduct unbecoming an officer). No details of the actions of the Captain have been released. Captain Graf, a 1985 graduate of the Naval Academy, was reassigned to the Pentagon. Full article at www.navytimes.com

The commanding officer of the Yokosuka, Japan-based cruiser Cowpens was relieved of duty Wednesday after being punished for “cruelty and maltreatment” during her time in charge, the Navy announced. In an unusual move, she is being permitted to continue on to an assignment in the Pentagon.

Capt. Holly Graf was brought before an admiral’s mast with Rear Adm. Kevin Donegan, the commander of Carrier Strike Group 5, after an inspector general’s investigation found problems with her “temperament and demeanor vis-a-vis her subordinates,” said Cmdr. Jeff Davis, a spokesman for 7th Fleet.

Davis said he could not elaborate about what the IG had found about Graf’s treatment of her crew, but he said it had been taking place “over a length of time,” including when the ship was in port and at sea. Specifically, Donegan found Graf guilty of violating Article 93 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice — which covers “cruelty and maltreatment” — and Article 133, “conduct unbecoming an officer,” according to information provided by Davis.

15. Captain Queeg, the novel The Caine Mutiny

WWII, captain of a mine sweeper in the Pacific theater. Command was too much for him and he went paranoid. Started rousting the crew. Accused the stewards of stealing strawberries from the mess. Turned the ship inside out in a pointless investigation.

Maybe she's being sent to the five sided circus to get her out of harm's way. If she was rousting the enlisted, there could be some payback if she'd stay in the command. Same-o with the officers.

Well, she's got her twenty; she might as well put in her papers. She sure isn't getting another stripe.

she was said to be in the habit of throwing things at subordinates, and in one instance grabbed someone by the neck in a choke type hold. It's the internet, take it FWIW, but that's what's out there. Also FWIW, she and the astronaut who tried to kidnap her romantic rival were USNA '85. That must make for some interesting conversations at class reunions.
