Democrats say they're set for Iraq funding showdown
WASHINGTON (AP) -- House Democratic leaders predict they will have enough votes to pass legislation requiring U.S. troops to begin leaving Iraq by October 1 and send it on to President Bush for his promised veto.

Several House members said they would go along with the bill negotiated with the Senate in a bid for party unity despite their desire for an earlier, binding withdrawal date.

The bill, already negotiated with Senate leaders, is expected to reach the president's desk as early as next week following a final Senate vote Thursday.

The House vote scheduled Wednesday would come as the top U.S. commander in Iraq, Gen. David Petraeus, and other defense officials try to convince lawmakers that a timetable would push Iraq into chaos.

The president's promised veto guarantees a showdown with Democrats emboldened by last year's election, which handed them control of Congress.

1. Would push Iraq into chaos? I must be an idiot because that's
how I'd describe the situation now.

6. But you haven't seen all of the wonderful schools being built
by Haliburton! You're missing the really big picture!

8. No, no, the situation in Iraq is only 'chaotic' right now!
It's good to see the congress standing up to Bush on Iraq, but too bad we'll never have the votes to override Bush's veto.

9. I don't know about not being able to override the veto.
I honestly didn't think there would be any mention of a troop withdrawal. Too many factions in the Dems.

4. Will they really have enough votes to override the veto?
I would certainly HOPE so, but rove will be all over the repukes like stink on shit, trying to keep them in line. He'll pull out ALL the blackmail cards he has on them.

7. I doubt that they'll have the votes, but
there are quite a few repugs who are vulnerable. I don't know how much pull rove will have.

I'm just happy that this is going to get out of conference & on dumbya's desk. I seriously doubted it would get that far with any language about troop withdrawal. Color me cynical.
