WASHINGTON (AFP) – Muslim groups reacted angrily Wednesday after it emerged that the US military in Iraq and Afghanistan were using rifle sights inscribed with coded Biblical references.

The Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) called on US Defense Secretary Robert Gates to immediately withdraw from combat use equipment found to have inscriptions of Biblical references.

It followed a report from ABC television which revealed that Michigan-based contractor Trijicon had sold up to 800,000 of the sights to the US military which were being used in combat.

The report said the religious codes -- referencing passages from the New Testament -- appeared to be a violation of US military rules prohibiting proselytizing of any religion in Iraq or Afghanistan.

A statement posted on the Trijicon website said: "As part of our faith and our belief in service to our country, Trijicon has put scripture references on our products for more than two decades.

All the pictures in the media are showing the full size ACOG scopes.

My Compact ACOG from the 1990's does not have the markings, but there is also no room on the smaller scope to put it.

i was not casting doubt on the story, just saying THESE sights (the ones i have on my dept. weapon) don't have em.

if the scope has such an inscription? Probably not.

If a muslim is given a weapon with such a scope, and he finds it offensive, remove the scope.

If he buys such a weapon, have it removed prior to the purchase.

If he is shot with such a weapon, bad luck got hime - with or without a scope.

I'm sure the pigs aren't thrilled about that.

It's amazing that they don't see anything wrong with imposing their religion on a government related activity. They're probably one of those super-patriotic love the country but hate the Constitution types.

I say make them replace all degraded scopes with non-religious ones at no cost.

contract that shows inclusion of the verses was prohibited. If it was not prohibited by the contract and the government inspectors accepted the scopes, chances are that there is no legal leg to stand on. No one has said that the scopes do not function as the government intended them to function.

This only stands to further--and needlessly--antagonize Afghans and Iraqis against our troops.

Of course it's also an affront to all Americans who value our secular republic.
