Wow, even FOX News hasn't tried this little trick. The conservative tabloid, New York Post, owned by Republican media magnate Rupert Murdoch, published a story today http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/horsesmouth/2007/04/murdochs_new_yo.phpcriticizing Democrats for giving a "death sentence" to millions of Iraqis. The only problem? The AP never wrote any such thing. You wouldn't really call this plagiarism - I'm not sure what you call it. Faking someone else's byline in order to print a story blasting a political enemy. Wow. TPM's Greg Sargent spoke with the AP reporter, David Espo, who the NY Post claims wrote the story. Espo says:

"I didn't write anything remotely like that. My name was on the story and I didn't write it anything like the way it was printed."

Publishing a fake AP story. I certainly hope the Associated Press is going to weigh in on this one.

7. That is the
important question, isn't it? It's not just who might want to .... rather, who could actually do it?

4. No, papers are basically free enterprise....
The FCC only works through broadcast because technically, the citizens of the US own the airwaves...

That's why cable falls in that fuzzy area...

5. News fraud? Identity theft?
The NY Post should be mandated to have a brown wrapper as a cover for all of the political pornography it shills.

9. AP most certainly has language in their contracts that covers problems like this
But one has to wonder if they are willing to go up against Murdoch or not. Or if they even care.

...over the cliff.
.... barking mad.

His media empire is a viral weapon of mass destruction. All the cells should be destroyed. His multiple megaphones should be confiscated.

14. Well now isn't this interesting
David Espo is in a position to defend his journalistic reputation. I hope he pursues this till the end and uncovers exactly who it was who took such freedom with his name. The AP also has a vested interest in finding out who was behind this, since their name is also attached.

I wonder if he/they were to choose not to is there anyway we can force an investigation into this?

18. Good questions
I don't know the answers, but I feel comfortable saying if they don't it will be due to money and power. If they were to being an investigation that they later let fizzle that would in effect put a salve over this and appease most of the population. Which was why I was wondering if there is any recourse available to pursue this w/o them being involved.

When money talks the truth walks. Sad, but this is the way it appears to be anymore.

17. I know too many people who believe if it's in print, it's true.
And Murdoch knows people believe that. It's the way all the repukes operate. Just get the lie out there. People almost never pay attention to retractions or the exposure of the lie.

21. When it comes to right wing propaganda,
the NY Post makes Fox news look like the old PBS.

IT is the most despicable, right wing trash rag in existence.

22. The Richmond Times-Dispatch has infamous "From Wire Reports" by line
I have read many above the fold articles "From Wire Reports" in the Times-Disgrace that bear almost no resemblance to anything I have read on a story the day before.

but then the T-D is so bad that even Fox News doesn't use it as a vehicle or a source.

27. I once spoke with a reporter from the Times-Dispatch
Edited on Thu Apr-26-07 01:28 PM by LibDemAlways
about my high school days with George Allen, and I could tell from the tone of his voice all he wanted to do was discredit me. Kept asking if I was a Democrat and insinuating that I was making shit up. I gave him a list of other people to contact who could corroborate what I was telling him, but he wasn't interested. This was long before Allen shot himself in the foot with "Macaca." The whores simply didn't want to hear the truth.

29. Yeah that is the general gist of things around here
regardless of what is going on all around them and regardless of the fact that the city votes heavily Dem they seem secure in the good old boy system of how things were. They routinely brush off any idea of anything else-from TV to radio to the paper. I think that they think they can ignore it away. They also seem to have a false sense of their weight as their continuance seems to have no effect.

24. Libel
J. Jonah Jameson: "It is not. I resent that. Slander is spoken. In print, it's libel"

Seriously though, this is not the kind of mistake someone just accidentally makes. This is worse than misreading the source. I sincerely hope that AP sues the NY Post so savagely that Reverend Mooney feels it through his chair.

It would be sweet if the NYP or Murdoch's whole empire had to stop using AP material.
