California Storm: 4 Feet of Snow, Pressure Record?

I just checked the stats on the California storm so far this week and the highest wind and wave readings were not affected yesterday or today. Obviously the big story yesterday was the tornadoes; today it is the snow, with several ski resorts reporting in with more than 4 feet of snow already. The breakdown is shown below. But the big story the next few days will be storm surge (which is rare there) and low pressure (it'll probably make your ears pop).

The lowest pressure ever measured in the state is 28.85" Hg according to Chris Burt, author of Extreme Weather. As of this hour, the pressure is already 28.92" at Crescent City in the northernmost part of the state (and 28.88 on the Oregon coast). But tomorrow night is when the big storm swings in further south, and if you believe the NMM forecast model, it will be 28.80" on the central coast, breaking the all-time record (in other words, a stronger storm has not hit the state in recorded history!).

1. We had a 50 foot tall oak fall down last night
Gusts to 45 mph and dime size hail covering our driveway so it looked like snow.

I had just put the horses in the barn when the hail started and the racket in there was unearthly (tin roof).

We had everything today - wind, rain, thunder, lightning, hail, and yes, even a brief period of sunshine about midafternoon.

Oh well, I'll get 2 years worth of firewood out of that oak.

8. when we lost our apple tree, it was losing a member of the family. I went and thanked it
for all the years of delicious apples and shade it gave us.

It was one of those trees that looks like a woman's torso with upstretched arms.

Friend up the road from me here (over the edge into Fresno County in the mountains) had the roof blow off one of her barns yesterday, and take off down her driveway. She had mini's and ponies in that particular one, and naturally, they were totally freaked.

I'm sure mine would have all had heart attacks........

24. Find a local woodworker and have her make you something from the wood
Then you'll always have a piece of that tree to remind you. Even if it's just a little turned wooden bowl or jar, you'll treasure it.

2. That storm has been rolling into Arizona - we have been having
pouring rains, and lots of snow in the high country. It's supposed to start raining again tonite and last 2 days - with 40 mph winds.

Crazy weather.

5. This is the way it looked from the backside of where where I work!




I tried to stay in as much as possible something about 220KV power lines and Lightening storms that don't mix! The plant I work at is running as spinning reserve for the power grid right now.

14. The sand dunes are pretty high the picture was taken from high up
after the flood of 69, a hundred year storm so they called it, they built a berm around the entire plant to keep the nearby river out!

The storms that went through here last night dropped between 2.5 and 3" of rain - See note below! Flooded streets that haven't flooded except for during hurricanes or tropical depressions. Tornado warnings all this early morning - the noise of the thunder woke me at 3AM.

I underestimated the rain:

11. We're supposed to get that storm from CA on Saturday...
It's supposed to be a very strong storm. I'm in Iowa.

Our only saving grace is that we're supposed to have a lucky day of higher-than-average temps, 40 or so.

All this week, it's been in the lower- to mid- 30's and we've had a huge ice storm. Thousands are
without power. The kids missed school today.

So, it's fortunate that when this storm from California hits, we'll have slightly warmer temps that will fend off
significant snowfall. Instead we'll just get rain and supposedly thunderstorms.

Thunderstorms...in January...in Iowa. Okaaayyyy.

12. Dayyum. I lived in Orange County for 8 years.
I'm glad I got out in time.

And here I thought the worst weather news is that much of the elephant seal rookery at Piedras Blancas has eroded away.

I had to drive 250 miles along the coast today. Some of it was in almost white-out conditions.

15. I'm near Sac. and I had to get off road it was rain and hailing so heavy.
Sorta reminds me of my days in Oregon where it rained like that frequently during the winter. I saw NWS website when I got home and they posted a tornardo warning for Sacramento. Odd for NorCal, but it has happened before--having F1 tornado touchdown with 2-3 other funnel clouds sailing by about 4 years ago. But let it rain. We need it. Especially at Lake Shasta.

17. Well it did rain pretty bad here but no where near as bad as my worst driving back east
in 85 I was at Edgewood MD. and I was driving in a Thunder Snow Storm it was coming down so hard the snow looked like a car wash brush rubbing my windshield! That was an experience I'll never forget! Well Hekate looks like were not to far apart I was watching the monitors for our plant in Elwood seems like it caught more weather than us.

22. I was surprised that California's lowest ever pressure was as high as that
For instance, I looked up the weather station closest to me in the UK, and it dipped below that one day last year - not a record or anything, just the kind of pressure it goes down to once a year or so:

Ventura County fire officials said that they had received reports that a tornado touched down in the eastern end of the city of Ventura near North Bank Drive and Montgomery Avenue, downing power lines and causing damage to cars, outbuildings and agriculture, as well as toppling a tree into a home.

There were no immediate reports of injuries, but Ventura County Fire Department spokesman Bill Nash said officials are still assessing the damage.

“There is more than a mile-long path of destruction,” Nash said. “It’s a pretty serious situation.”

Ventura County Sheriff’s Sgt. Jack Richards said fire and law enforcement personnel were going house to house in two neighborhoods and an agricultural area.

Reported Tornado Creates Chaos In Santa Barbara Neighborhood
Santa Barbara, CA-- Gale force winds swept through Santa Barbara Wednesday afternoon, knocking over power poles and uprooting five trees.

According to eye witness accounts on scene, a forceful wind blew through the area, knocking over trees and power poles, sending live wires into the street. It all happened near the intersection of Haley Street at Bath Street. Several cars parked along the street, were crushed by the fallen trees, but no injures have been reported.

The National Weather Services says the event was likely a small tornado, but they are still assessing data.

A large tree on the Las Flores Preschool property toppled over, blocking the 200-block of Haley Street. Fortunately no children or staff members were injured when the tree fell. Santa Barbara School District officials say they've canceled the preschool's afternoon session.


Due to the extent of the damage, the southbound Highway 101 off-ramp at Haley Street has been shut down until further notice.
