Wyoming (as in Matt Shepard) Schools prohibit anti-hate banners over gay sponsorship
"I don't believe homosexuality is a normal lifestyle, but I don't have anything against them." -Joe Fabian, school board member

CHEYENNE - School board members in Wheatland rejected a request this week to put back up banners for an anti-hate campaign at several of their schools.

The reason: They were sponsored by a gay and lesbian organization.

One Wyoming attorney says the action may be unconstitutional.

Platte County School District 1 trustees voted 4-3 to keep the Anti-Defamation League's "No Place for Hate" banners down at Wheatland High and West Elementary.

The schools were two of 25 in Colorado and Wyoming taking part in the program.

One of the sponsors listed on the banner is the Gay and Lesbian Fund for Colorado. Wheatland board members and parents took issue with that, according to the district.

The others sponsors are Qwest and the David & Laura Merage Foundation.

"The board thought it was inappropriate to have that sponsorship hanging up in the school," said Stuart Nelson, the district's superintendent.

1. Interesting comments after the article.
Why do people hate us so much anyway? Jesus . . . . oh, well, THAT's one reason I guess.

4. I couldn't resist posting a comment
I basically said: To "former grad" who said, " i do not believe that gay and lesbian supporters should be aloud to participate in any school activities". Aside from being a bigot, the school must not have done a very good job teaching you; it's "allowed", not "aloud"

Stupid freeper spelling again

7. I thought there was no place for hate.
Is it okay to hate SOME people? Even the three who voted to keep the banner up and other supporters in Wheatland? So wholesale hate is okay too?

12. Don't Hate Wheatland! Please help us change it for the better
Most in Wheatland do not hate! The program at WHS was great and people are working to get it going again.
We have a petition on www.wheaterville.com We want 10K sigs which is 3x the population of Wheatland so we need lots of help and sigs from people who just care about the issue. We're hoping to make positive change, and permanent change! Thanks if you can sign and pass it on. Wheatland is ok, just needs some help right now! www.wheaterville.com

11. We're trying to get the banners put back up

I'm from Wheatland, and there are more people here that WANT the banners back up then you'd think! And the vote waas 4 to 3, so it was close. Just four people made this decision!

Wheatland is an ok place, it could use some help tho, when it comes to open mindedness. We're trying to get the banners back and the program reinstated in a nice, peaceful way, making change happen in the process. People ARE learning from this!

There're are a lot of positive supportive comments on www.wheaterville.com and they are looking for people to write editorials to keep the dialogue going. Also, there is a petition, online, and you cna get to it from Wheaterville website. 10,000 sigs is a lot, way more then live in Wheatland but this is an American issue for all.

Anyway, don't hate Wheatland. Help us change it for the better. Please sign the petition, send in some comments, or even write up what you think and send it as an editorial. Not everybody reads the weekly paper, but everybody reads Wheaterville.

Thank you!
