A whale of a victory!

Last Friday, after Care2 and our partner Defenders of Wildlife deluged the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) with over 26,000 comments urging federal officials to protect the imperiled Cook Inlet beluga whale, NMFS proposed listing the rare species under the Endangered Species Act (ESA).

The proposal came just in time - the Cook Inlet beluga whale population has plummeted nearly 60 percent in the past 15 years. However, the federal agency's proposal is an important early step toward securing much-needed Endangered Species Act protections for this amazing marine mammal.

These beloved belugas aren't fully protected yet. But I know that, with your help, we can ensure that Cook Inlet's beluga whales are around for generations to come. Stay tuned in the months ahead for more ways to help.
