"Stupid Hooverism" - Rachel Maddow's term for this proposed spending freeze
She's also pointing out that "this big right turn" is NOT going to get any Republican votes.

A point Keith Olbermann and David Corn made last hour, too.

2. While being sympathetic to her point,

she seemed overwrought. It reminded me of election night when she was frantic that "nothing had changed" because states like Ohio and Florida hadn't been called at that point in time. I'm on her side and am suspicious of what might be frozen. But, Jared Bernstein was convincing in his push back.

5. I just can't believe that this administration won't look at how
the Great Depression came about and how the Roosevelt administration eventually turned it around. The game plan is there. Also Obama should note that Roosevelt was a three term President and elected to a fourth term when he died. I don't think it was because he followed Hoover's policies and had a bunch of staffers and advisors who were only slightly left of Hoover's.

23. What happened to trust in "the plan"?
This step isn't something Obama is taking lightly, I am sure. It's just a step in a larger plan. Maybe we'll know more about it after tomorrow night.

24. Oh, it's part of a larger plan, alright.
Along with the "Debt Commission".

We're watching corporate stooges turn the government into little more than a collection plate for Corporate America.

6. They are so right. It's so damn depressing.
And I also have news for him: Middle-class "relief" designed to help nobody but college students, parents, and caregivers for elderly parents ISN'T GOING TO HELP ME ONE IOTA!!!!!!!!

I paid off my student loans back in 1997.

I have no children.

My mother is dead, and so far my father is hale and heartier than he probably should be. His wife is also keeping fine watch over him to make sure he stays that way. We don't even live in the same state.

I may be part of the "Sandwich Generation," but I'm not one of the sandwiches...just a single, older, childless, unemployed potato chip left forgotten at the bottom of the bag.

I need a JOB. A J-O-B, JOB. Not tax breaks. Not incentives. A JOB.

Cutting government spending isn't going to help me get a job. Government spending on job creation, however, might HELP.

Please. Obama. Quit trying to appease and please people who didn't even vote for you. Try pleasing people who DID. OK? Thanks.

7. I just hope they wait to introduce this when the country is in real
real recovery. If they initiate it too soon, Ws will go into
a double dip Depression. Just as well call it what it will
feel like.

10. Isn't a spending freeze antithetical to a stimulus plan?
What's the use of pouring money into the economy with one hand while gathering it up with the other?

Seriously, I don't think he knows what he's doing any more. This MA election thing has got him rattled, listening to any half-baked idea.

Jesus.

11. It's been suggested...
That there are several hundred billion in TARP funds (both unspent originally and since repaid) that could be repurposed as stimulus funding.

I don't know if that's correct, or even possible, however.

20. Except that would not be a spending freeze
Edited on Tue Jan-26-10 01:59 AM by jgraz
Spending is spending, no matter how you pay for it. You could use TARP money and call it "deficit neutral", but you couldn't call it a spending freeze.

Plus, if they were going to do it that way, why would they keep it a secret? Jared Bernstein said nothing about using TARP funds during that interview.

15. Rachel is correct as usual.
If Obama goes through with this spending freeze, he is going to end up another Hoover. It ain't gonna be pretty, that's for sure.

22. Rachel finally finds her last straw.
She's tried to tow the line, propping up the sagging agenda of the Dems in DC, winning the love of Obama apologists, who must now toss her under their bus.

She is just too smart to fall for the latest.
