Estimate: 1.3 billion smoke worldwide

ATLANTA, Jan. 25 (UPI) -- Tobacco has at least 1.3 billion users and kills more than 14,500 people worldwide every day, while debilitating and sickening many more, U.S. researchers say.

Thomas Glynn, director of the American Cancer Society Cancer Science and Trends, says the organization's report points out the globalization of tobacco began more than 500 years ago but public health has responded only in the past 50 years to death, disease and economic disruption caused by tobacco use.

The World Bank estimates more than 180 million lives could be saved in the first half of this century if the prevalence of current tobacco users were cut in half by 2020.

The report, published in CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians, says raising tobacco taxes is considered the most effective intervention to reduce tobacco use.

So? Aren't we supposed to be upset over too many people on the planet, not enough resources, etc and so on?

But I guess some people just want to save the souls/lives of others even if it comes to forcing them to follow their religion...errr ideal of how life should be lived.

It's ok to make choices for others, as long as you have a good excuse.
