Unimaginable stupidity

by Jed Lewison

So the Obama Administration is preparing to announce a freeze on Federal discretionary spending through 2013.

And they are proposing it in the middle of a the deepest recession since the Great Depression.

Apparently, it's a political decision made in response to a single election. Great. A single U.S. Senate race in Massachusetts is now dictating fiscal policy for the next three years.

It might at least make some sense if it were a smart political decision. But there's nothing to suggest that it's anything but unalloyed idiocy.

In 1937, FDR followed the same course, pulling back his stimulus programs that had been boosting the economy. The results were catastrophic. The economy tanked. And so did the fortunes of the Democratic Party. Predictably, Republicans won 79 seats in the 1938 midterms.

Fortunately, FDR recognized his mistake and reversed course, increasing spending and boosting the economy -- even before the start of World War II.

Flash forward seventy years, and President Obama is making the same mistake, probably with the same consequences.

Except this time he's got the benefit of history. But he's refused to learn history's lesson.

It seems impossible to believe, but there it is. One of the worst decisions -- if not the worst decision -- that the administration could make. And they've made it.

Such a waste.

1. He's right, this is absolutely stupid at this time
How does the WH expect the lower classes to treat this while they're still pissed as hell about throwing trillions to the banks?

This might be Obama's "throwing flowers at our feet" moment.

2. The only lesson history teaches is that nobody learns any lessons from history.
I forgot who said that but it seems relevant. Anyway I don't think Obama's forte is historical thought. Besides pretty speechifying I am at a loss to know what his forte actually is!

3. Oh, if it's a reactionary diary on Kos, then it MUST be credible!
Edited on Mon Jan-25-10 11:03 PM by liberalmuse
There's too much reactionary shit coming from the left these days, and Obama usually proves them wrong. This isn't the 1930's or The Great Depression. It's a slightly different scenario. I'll wait and see before I drop my load. In the mean time, I've got to get the fuck out of this cesspool. Too many 'liberals' (and I use that term very lightly) have gone utterly batshit. This is not the DU I have known for 8 years. Not even close.

Even over at Kos, that diary has drawn scorn. Which should tell us something.

6. Are you kidding?
This is not a mistake, it's totally intentional. They want to bankrupt this country so they can build their NAU and NWO.

10. What the hell?
Imagine the great depression if Republicans were in charge. I'm afraid if this administration keeps going down this path we're opening the door to that possibility.

Someone please tell me that won't happen....

14. When is Obama going to get it?
Stuff like this does not curry favor with the GOPs. They just scoff at you saying you should have done this a long time ago, and go to vote for GOP candidates.

Honest to Gods, isn't anyone awake over there to let him in on the secret?
