Thanks to the unbridled ambition and innate ruthlessness of South Carolina's Lieutenant Governor Andre Bauer, the Republican mask of benevolence and 'caring' slipped momentarily to reveal to all concerned the true face of today's Republican Party. Bauer, seething with righteousness and exuding disdain compared giving food assistance (especially free school lunches) to disadvantaged people to "feeding stray animals who are therefore more likely to breed.
The strikingly fascist overtones of these remarks, (which come uncomfortably close to Nazi Germany's policy of identifying certain groups as lesser humans whose breeding (and ultimately living itself) needed to be restricted) is perhaps surprising in that what seems to be a fairly astute politician would let his contempt for those citizens who are economically disadvantaged show so blatantly. While he is known for his intemperate remarks both now and in the past, his thoughts on this subject still demonstrate with crystal clarity the essential Republican belief that they are entitled to pull up the ladder behind them - as a child Bauer benefited from free lunches himself,
When called on his wildly intemperate remarks by a wide variety of sources throughout the political spectrum Bauer insisted he was not bad-mouthing people laid off from work in the recession or advocating taking food from children. Instead he tried to couch his slip in terms of the need to break the cycle of dependency. By Republican dogma, it was fine for Bauer to benefit from free lunches but now the same policy is now nothing more than encouraging stray animals to breed.
I can think of no better example demonstrating the overwhelming hypocrisy of Republican politicians' true attitude toward their sheep-like followers. Unfortunately, I doubt that this very revealing moment will have any more effect on the true believer Rethug base than did all the fuck-ups of eight years of Dim Son. Still, seeing how the younger more ambitious Rethugs are now willing to shed their public mask and let their true feelings publicly show in all their venomous glory is an indication how very low they are prepared to go in any electoral context now. We are forewarned, and we need to be forearmed for the 2010 elections and be prepared to call them on it every time it appears.
