Larisa Alexandrovna On Bill Moyers' PBS Special "Buying The War"

April 25, 2007
Buying the War

The PBS special on how our fourth estate sold us the Iraq war is so damning, that I actually thought Tim Russert would curl up in a fetal position and start crying. But here are my other observations of this amazing special that should be seen by the public as nothing short of a call to arms:

1. Jonathan Landay, Warren Strobel, and Walter Pincus came off - rightfully - as the types of reporters we think of as heroes on the front line, the types of reporters that are very few unfortunately.

2. The astounding revelation that corporate executives from companies buying ad space actually pressured CNN on behalf of the administration.

3. The disturbing big picture view of just how well organized the administration's war marketing campaign was and questions that I have now (or more fully now) of just who funded this stellar effort to convince a grieving nation into a fabricated war.

- snip -

7. The shocking lack of humility by those who helped lie this nation into a horrific war via their reporting- be it knowingly or unknowingly. Most of these journalists and "opinion makers" declined to comment and/or be interviewed, fearing perhaps, that to do so would force them to have to own up to their actions.

7. Have a heapin' helpin' of number four in that story, sadly
The very serious understanding that outside of a few reporters, the Washington Post and New York Times, as well as every TV network are in one form or another an extension of the government.

4. It might have saved Timmy's rep if he had
As it was, I thought he sounded like an arrogant, whiny president of the Student Council waiting for a prom date: "I wish my phone had rung". That explains a lot.

Time vs. money - the greedy corporate newsies are in a race to beat their competitors with sound bytes. Pincus, Landay, Strobel (a.k.a. journalists) know that publishing TRUTH takes time & work.

You are exactly right about it being a call to arms.

6. Didn't Russert look like SHIT in that piece?
It was a small measure of delight to see him looking so sweaty and bloated. The baaastid.

I've been asking people to 'follow the money' when it comes to media. My cursory review of the 'big money' advertisers shows a SHITLOAD of them with federal government and Pentagon contracts. "Who would have ever suspected" (to quote Condi) that fucking PROCTOR AND GAMBLE would have a HUGE Pentagon contract? GE--one of the top 100 Pentagon contractors...

The advertisers fund the shows. The funds pay the salaries of the Russert whores.

Follow the damned money. War may not be good for children and other living things, but it's GREAT for the corporate bottom line. And anyone who says otherwise must be silenced, by any means necessary.

That's the fucking truth, here. Any time you see someone reaching a large audience with an antiwar message, the next thing ya know, they're off the damned air.

13. Naaw. He's not a propagandist. That takes a deft touch. He's a flat-out whore.
And I hope his bloated carcass jumps the shark, real soon.

14. I don't disagree.
I hate all those lying MFers who did this to our country and to all those innocent people in Iraq.

8. It's good to know Knight-Ridder reporters were onto this from the beginning...
... and disheartening that that fat cat ego bloated media stars at the major papers and media outlets were too lazy to pick up on their fine reporting and ask penetrating questions on their own.

Also the interview with Donohue was astonishing for its clarity in what was going on. They canned his show not because of ratings, but because he was considered a target of criticism from those pushing for this war.

Moyers is a shining example of what journalism could be again in this country.

11. Russert couldn't pick up a phone and talk to the mid-level folks to get the truth?
Bob Simon did.

Russert is a paid liar.

15. I only caught a few minutes last night, but...
(thanks for the link, lostnotforgotten, so I can see the whole thing and point others there).

But on to my point. The part I saw was about the aluminum tubes. What strikes me is that I heard all this before we invaded.

I read it... you know... right frigging here (on DU).

I don't know whether to bask in self-congratulatory admiration of DU, or be just livid that what was common knowledge on an open, public forum couldn't break into the mass media conversation. It wasn't a damn secret, we were all talking about it at the time.

I'm more convinced than ever that the next president needs to push some real reform on the media.

Liberal media my ass.
