SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - When the aliens finally invade Earth, you may wish you had listened to Travis Taylor and Bob Boan.


After all, they have written "An Introduction to Planetary Defense," a primer on how humanity can defend itself if little green men wielding death rays show up at our cosmic doorstep.


"The probability really is there that aliens exist and are old enough to have technology to enable them to come here," Taylor said in an interview.

Taylor and Boan are hardly basement-dwelling paranoids obsessed with tinfoil hats and Area 51. Taylor holds advanced degrees in astronomy and physics, and is an associate at consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton. He and Boan have done consulting work for the Defense Department and the U.S. space agency NASA.

FERMI'S BLUNDER?

Taylor and Boan -- along with co-authors R.C. Anding and T. Conley Powell -- revisit two issues that frequently pop up in the debate about whether homo sapiens is alone in the universe: Drake's Equation and Fermi's Paradox.

Or else they will be shifty con artists who will eat us, as in V.

they wouldn't even need death rays. Kinetic weapons is all they'd need. Know what happens when a house-sized rock comes in at 11Km/sec or faster? Look at Meteor Crater in Arizona. We have absolutely no defense against that.

Sounds like a cool book. (Drake's Equation and Fermi's Paradox part).

As for the rest:

We gotta watch put for them pesky aliens. Right now they're only going after some cows and a few stray humans, but who knows what they got planned for later on. Not only that, but you just know this "War on Terra" ain't going to last forever, so all the folks at Halliburton, GE, Blackwater, etc. will be needing jobs in the future. Besides if it works real good, we won't need to build that fence on the Mexican border, if you know what I mean. :sarcasm:

Several other aliens try to lure away cows standing in a field by whistling and offering them straw. The cows are not taking the bait, and apparently as a result several of them have been turned inside out. Police officer Barbrady explains that cows turning inside out is not unusual, clearly revealing that he is incompetent.

Every time I talk to my right-wing buddies about the latest "Stupid Bush Trick", I watch them turn inside out right before my eyes.

Nope nothin' unusual at all, so ya gotta figure them were Repuke cows, probably Rush listeners too.

The likelihood of humans being roughly equivalent to aliens in technological might is nil. A war where aliens come to earth will end ala the Arthur C. Clarke novel Childhood's End.

That if aliens do/have/will come to Earth, it is purely by accident.
Alien pilot:"Oh, shit we're lost."
Alien co-pilot:"Wh....Where are we? Crikey, this place is spooky..."
Alien Captain: "Obviously these creatures are suffering from some sort of poisoning. Let's go, before this toxin has a chance to breach our ship."
