1. Yep. That's what he was doing.
I just groaned when he said it, but I tried to think of the best possible way he could have meant it, and sure enough, that's how he's explaining it. It's just a pity that Tweety's such an idiot about opening his mouth and saying the first thing that comes out, however awkwardly phrased.

33. actually, for his generation, it was a great thing to say. unless you
remember how awful it was with Jim Crow and segregation and all -which most youngin's don't- you cannot appreciate the sentiment he expressed. It was good. Tweety is a sincere person on this regard.

however poorly it came out.

7. Oh, I thought I knew,
I just thought he couldn't possibly have phrased it worse, is all, and I wish he'd think before he says this stuff rather than just opening his mouth and letting it fall out like he always does.

5. In general, he said that he could easily recall how in the sixties, race was a paramount issue
and all that people in politics seemed able to do was look at all others through the lens of what race the others were vs. the race they themselves were, and they tended to view themselves and everyone else as being broken up into little groups or tribes based on race. And he thinks Obama has come to the point where he gets in a room and delivers an address like this and nobody is even thinking about what race he is, they're just listening to the substance of his message. So in that sense he's transcended racial issues and Tweety felt this in the room.

That's a paraphrase, but it's my best effort.

30. Yes, and in the transcendence part he's right.
Edited on Thu Jan-28-10 01:20 PM by CTyankee
But it's been discussed ad nauseum in the last 2 years with Obama's rise. At this point, it is really stating the obvious (not for some I realize, who are truly "left behind"). Therefore, rehashing it seems a little odd. It makes me think that Matthews really hasn't transcended the race thing himself.

In any case, that was an odd takeaway from the SOTU. So many substantive issues that Obama covered were of great interest to every citizen. Why wasn't Matthews discussing those issues and what Obama said he planned to do abou them?

9. I hope there's a video soon because it's hard to paraphrase
What I thought CM was able to do was demonstrate his own sincerity.

8. He should quit while he's behind.
All night, he's acted like he just discovered that Obama is not a white guy.

Never mind anything that was actually said during the SOTU address.... Hey! Check out the black dude that nobody realized was a black dude until tonight!

(I've never had much respect for Matthews, but tonight he exceeded my lack of expectations by being a douchey-weirdo.)

What the fuck was he thinking?

11. I think you have it backwards
What he talked about was how it appeared to him that tonight everybody seemed to forget that the president *is* a black man. Not that they only tonight realized he was black.

Maybe you meant to write it like that.

12. Maybe, but backwards or not,
all he talked about was black this and black that... Made me want to puke.

(paraphrased): "Check out how black the president is! I wonder what he was talking about?.... Look, there's a black guy! It's nice that people don't point out that the President is a Black dude. We've come so far as a country. You want proof? Check out our black motherfuckin' president!"

That was Tweety's entire shtick tonight. He didn't say SHIT about the SOTU Address. What kid of fuckwit acts like that?

15. It wasn't Tweety's "entire shtick tonight"
He was on with KO and they talked about specifics from the SOTU, too. But surely you know that and are pissed off about his "epiphany".

What I think about all this is that being colorblind to race shouldn't be a goal or some holy grail. Humanity developed being able to discern as a protective mechanism. I think all life on earth does that. So not noticing someone's race is as silly as not recognizing the difference between men and women.

It appears to be important to Matthews. I agree with people who say he messed up with how he expressed his feelings about it. But I do think he was sincere. A fuckwit can have their heart in the right place even if their mouth is moving ahead of their brain. Live TV doesn't allow for enough thinking time.

I'm willing to accept that his incessant race-comments pissed me off enough for me to discount all of his incisive, cutting-edge commentary*. I guess I must've just missed the important stuff.

* I actually typed "vommentary" - spellcheck caught it, but I still laughed at the Freudian-typo.

14. I really am astonished that so many have attacked him tonight.
He did not say it well initially but his heart was in the right place and I am sure the President would have understood what he was saying and appreciated it as a compliment. He did a much better job explaining it later on Rachel's show.

How does it feel Chris? Are you proud of your work? How does it feel to be on the receiving end?

He was trying to say something like.... (true or not) we have entered an age where we are not swayed by the color of a politician. If this is truly the case, why even bring up race? Furthermore, his dumb remark completely overshadow any other point he may have made about the speech. Somehow, Matthews always makes things about Matthews. I wish he would retire.
