Major Garrett Accidentally Tweets Link to Vegas Call-Girl Website to His 13,059 Followers
Source: New York magazine

It's a nightmare that anyone with a Twitter account is vaguely afraid of, but no one before the year 2005 would have ever dreamed of having to worry about: Major Garrett, Fox News' White House correspondent, accidentally tweeted the wrong link to his 13,059 followers.

He intended to send out a shortened link to a transcript of last night's State of the Union address. Instead, the link that went out was one to a Las Vegas call-girl website. Gawker managed to nab the series of tweets before he took them down:

... Enraged, he admonished and ordered: For those suckling snide syrup. I publicly acknowledged an innocent mistake and corrected it. If that's not good enuf, take a hike. Wed 27 Jan 20:18

... As Gawker observes, it's extremely unlikely that bit.ly would make that kind of error. But why would Washington-based Garrett be looking up a Vegas-based website like that?

13. LOLOLOLOL!!!!!
Ya gotta use that little copy link!

Click-n-Drag will bite ya on the ass every time.

What a coincidence, though - Now I want to go through my bit.ly links and see where I go if I truncate a character or two off the end of it.

15. Damn, every shortened version of the URL goes somewhere. Dude gets a pass on this one.
Bit.ly should be a little more careful in how they construct their URLs.

And if I were bit.ly, I would be suing Garrett for libel.

22. It's probably both.
The hooker URL is a shortened version of the SOTU URL. It's likely that Garrett just messed up his paste.

On the other hand, it's pretty lame that a randomly messed-up URL goes to an escort site. These URL shrinking sites (qurl, tinyurl) are usually a lot more careful than that. bit.ly needs to change their algorithm.

24. Oh, it's Garrett's fault. Of that I have no doubt.
Dude didn't copypasta the provided link correctly and now he's blaming his boneheaded mistake on bit.ly:

25. Yes, but do you get my point about bit.ly?
Hey, no one would like to see a Faux Snoozer get busted more than I would, but some blame really has to fall on bit.ly. They should not have *every* possible letter combination be a valid URL with them. It's bad design on their part.

26. Not really
If Garrett had pasted the link properly then his twitter followers would have been directed to the correct site. If he used a decent Twitter API/app his tweeted links would have been automatically shortened via bit.ly or tinyURL and he wouldn't have had to copypasta. Mr. Man had fumble fingers and that's not anyone's fault but his own.

32. Allowing dumb users to shoot themselves in the foot is generally considered bad design
Implementing a simple checksum on the generated URLs would prevent this.

35. Perhaps you are correct
I really don't know that much about scripts and algorithms.

All I know is that he blamed bit.ly when the fact is he copy/pasted the provided URL incompletely without testing it first. That's not bit.ly's fault yet he blamed them and when a news reporter makes the claim that a provider's service doesn't work properly, that can affect the company's good name.

Neither of which applies to the post you just responded to.

However, the former seems to apply to your post. Go figure...
