1. So how come the republican mayor doesn't want to?
As a new yorker I'm torn over this issue. It would be a tremendous waste of money, but on the other hand don't we waste tons of money on other things that are of symbolic importance?

As for the inconvenience it would cause those in the area, that doesn't even enter into my equation.

mayor bloomberg in November...

“I support the Obama Administration’s decision to prosecute 9/11 terrorists here in New York. It is fitting that 9/11 suspects face justice near the World Trade Center site where so many New Yorkers were murdered. We have hosted terrorism trials before, including the trial of Omar Abdel-Rahman, the mastermind of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. When I spoke to Attorney General Holder earlier today, I told him New York City stands ready to assist the federal court in the administration of justice in any way necessary. I have great confidence that the NYPD, with federal authorities, will handle security expertly. The NYPD is the best police department in the world and it has experience dealing with high-profile terrorism suspects and any logistical issues that may come up during the trials.”

Or else he was brought on board with talking points. Really doesnt make much difference. It WILL cost a ton and that is something we have to consider.

5. Why would it cost more than trying any other murderer?
Do you think every terrorist in the world will show up and block traffic for thirty seconds? This is not a show trial and the courtroom will not be packed with bystanders. I do not understand your reasoning at all.

6. I don't have any idea why it should cost more. They say it will.
http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/01/06/city-says-911-trials-will-cost-200-million-per-year/?hp

The Bloomberg administration has placed the price for security operations for the trials of Khalid Shaikh Mohammed and other terrorism suspects connected to the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, at more than $200 million a year, which would make it by far the costliest security operation for a single event in the city in recent memory.

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg outlined the city’s projected security expenses in a two-page letter that was sent on Tuesday to Peter R. Orszag, the director of the federal Office of Management and Budget. The letter, which seeks federal reimbursement for the full costs of providing security for the trials, was released by City Hall officials on Wednesday.

In the letter, the mayor said the cost for security operations would be $216 million for the first year and $206 million per year in subsequent years. Much of the expense — about $200 million each year — would be for personnel, the mayor wrote.

Even if they wind up spending the cash on $200 hammers, they have said it will cost this much and surely they will spend that money somehow.

3. Because the republicans say NO, and the Democrats are dumb enough
to listen to them.
