The one good thing about the racist, confused Tea Party is the fracturing of the repubbies. They are essentially dividing themselves into business-crazy and fundamentalist-insane. The right-wing crazy camps have mutually benefited for three decades from their unity. The Tea Party is undermining the vital make-up of the right's coalition, they may even win a handful of primaries in very red districts. But, they will never be a national, or threatening, party.
There is an opportunity here. With new divisions come new unities. It is too early to say whether a true recalibration of party make-up is under way.
The greatest potential for the Democratic Party is to redefine themselves on the economic spectrum. We need to focus the new division along class lines. It is partly the populist principle that has attracted some teabaggers. That value is not solely found in those handful of nuts, either. It is a widespread and common value, that people must come first. If the Democratic Party can prove that they are the party of the people, through real results and strong framing, we can pull more from the repubs than the teabaggers can. And, the ones that will join with us won't be neo-cons, de-regulators, free-marketers or big business. They won't be the paranoid goofballs that have joined with the teabaggers. They will be citizens trying to rebuild themselves and this country. With the proper narrative and leadership, the story of economic progress can rise above any other divisions.
There is an opportunity to redefine the political compass for a generation. We won't need the corporate sponsors, we can have the people on our side. Or rather, we can join the people.
