FBI Wants Records Kept of Web Sites Visited
Source: CNET News

WASHINGTON--The FBI is pressing Internet service providers to record which Web sites customers visit and retain those logs for two years, a requirement that law enforcement believes could help it in investigations of child pornography and other serious crimes.

FBI Director Robert Mueller supports storing Internet users' "origin and destination information," a bureau attorney said at a federal task force meeting on Thursday.

As far back as a 2006 speech, Mueller had called for data retention on the part of Internet providers, and emphasized the point two years later when explicitly asking Congress to enact a law making it mandatory. But it had not been clear before that the FBI was asking companies to begin to keep logs of what Web sites are visited, which few if any currently do.

The FBI is not alone in renewing its push for data retention. As CNET reported earlier this week, a survey of state computer crime investigators found them to be nearly unanimous in supporting the idea. Matt Dunn, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in the Department of Homeland Security, also expressed support for the idea during the task force meeting.

Greg Motta, the chief of the FBI's digital evidence section, said that the bureau was trying to preserve its existing ability to conduct criminal investigations. Federal regulations in place since at least 1986 require phone companies that offer toll service to "retain for a period of 18 months" records including "the name, address, and telephone number of the caller, telephone number called, date, time and length of the call."

At Thursday's meeting (PDF) of the Online Safety and Technology Working Group, which was created by Congress and organized by the U.S. Department of Commerce, Motta stressed that the bureau was not asking that content data, such as the text of e-mail messages, be retained.

1. We should all be required to wear GPS locators at all times, as well, as this would aid . . .
in investigations of all sorts of serious crimes. I'm sure we could easily find any number of law enforcement personnel -- especially a great number of those in such low levels as an ICE agent -- but any number of "investigators" could be brought forth to anonymously support any and all encroachments on the peoples' constitutional rights.

All a reasonable person can do is sadly shake their head, spit in the snow, and proclaim the judgement of the ages: "Sheeit."

begins to fail due to critical illness or advanced age, thereby saving money on health-care.

5. Makes sense, what they want to do is follow the bouncing proxy server...
Depts if the US Gov experience perniciously intrusive, probative hacks upon mainframes every day. Cyber warfare was brought up as a noteworthy/high on the list concern inside an Itel report just the other day http://intelligence.senate.gov/hearings.cfm?hearingid=4370&witnessId=9076 so yeah - end child pornography but then again you bet...

Locks only keep honest people in or out. I think people will still be able to visit where they will. Some sites being clearly divisive, violently brutal and socially subversive even advocating Turner Diaries-esque chaos & political assassination: it may ultimately turn on those persons ability to justify their visitations

9. It's possible they'll use it for that
but it's far more likely they'll use it to target the "radical left".
You know, the terrorists that plot the downfall of the country by saying things like "Bush sucks!" on a message board.

24. Oh yes, I do understand the bouillabaisse of slippery slopes...
I intend to start a thread later or early evening that will be ignored I am quite sure ignorance being bliss: but after tracking the RW meme machine yesterday I've noticed a theme emerging/regarding their new call for the treatments of radicalized persons - which you *are* free to include Turner Diary Douche and/or "the radicalized left" and others as it turns out

Initially, though running now for a couple weeks somewhat innocuously, the faux-concerns on their part remain brittle & shrill but that's what they were to begin with although when they get their demographic on-board that is when that carrion starts to flap its wings

It is very subtle at this point but like a snow ball it is picking up flake after flake so I'll give you a hint: it involves being considered a social (read here "socialized", that shoe fits too) anti-civilization deviant for certain & very specific forms of personal behavior (hm, wonder where I've heard that one before) that is being spun out, like a mandala, to include the assertion that says that radicalized/socialized/deviant behavior *can* be extrapolated from binge-living, sexual promiscuity with multiple partners (read here a disrespect for 'traditional family values'), purchasing patterns, being socially casted out (which is what mean little boys & girls do the very, very best read there: Monica Crowley), longterm inability to find & hold a job especially an important one like talking into a microphone while sitting on your ass - soon to follow: thoughts, dreams, goals, aspirations - like reading a resume - as a resultant of known, already referenced behavioral science, from a known point and therefore their "civilized" response to such persons alluded to above to include they with life-ending-pains brought about by their IRL inability to become the protectorates of Noble CGI Savages such as the Navii of Pandora: all of it is to be cobbled in advance and in response to a war not just 'with' civilization but *on* civilization by romanticized, go-teed, pot smoking, raspberry beret wearing revolutionaries on urban Vespa's with manifesto', fizzy bombs and tattoo guns in their saddle bags

If you don't mind, I'll send you a PM when its up - oh yeah, there's a couple ways to look at it. Though as a practical matter if "the radical left" cares to be included into a basket-case of vile, bloody, fizzling Turner Diary bombs and red flags then they will be

There are some sites that DU Admin will delete as well, and there are specific reasons why they do. I think it important to evaluate threat with eyes-wide-open, to, hopefully, better understand the *matrix* of bogeymen and morphing threats before us all

but I expect the NSA is doing more than the FBI.

Too bad none of this will help them stop the seemingly unstoppable plague of viruses, spam promoting illegal things and identity/credit card theft. THAT they can't do anything about...

20. Is it fascism yet?
This is going to drive a lot of the smaller ISP's out of business, they simply couldn't afford the kind of hardware and such to do the FBI's bidding. Meanwhile, anybody with a modicum of knowledge will be able to find away around this.

crime spree mainly in the midwest frustrated local and state law enforcement because the criminals used technology - cars and telephones. Hoover grabbed as much publicity and government funding as possible, and grew the FBI to fit every perceived need from catching Nazi spies to looking for left wing agitators in the '70's radical movement. They actually did catch some KKK murderers, too.
They also infiltrated and urged left wing groups to commit violent acts and then arrested them. Sort of a two-for-one special.
At times they are a great asset to the US, and at times not so much.
