In the East - Where are you and how much snow did you wake up to?
Northern West Virginia, 18" of new snow and still coming down hard hard.

Washington DC is about 150 miles to the east of here, I would imagine people there are just buried under the snow. Think of it as nature's filibuster, every thing comes to stop.

Where are you and how much snow did you wake up to this morning?

38. I was listening to all the weather reports about the storm because I was going out last
night, and HATE driving in ice and snow. My last car was totaled in that sudden ice storm that we had at the end of December. All reports indicated that the storm wouldn't make it past 287 because of the airflow from Canada. The reports were obviously right.

I'm sure you and your dog will have a snowy morning walk sometime in the near future. :)

I really hate to think of what might have happened if that storm had come farther north.

Cities would have been shut down, yes, but here in the Hilltowns we probably would have gotten close to three feet, as we often get twice as much as they do down in the "flatlands".

22. How are the airports running down there?
One of my sons-in-law was supposed to be going to Sweden on business today, leaving from NJ. His plan was to drive to NJ from Mass, then hop the plane. We didn't know if he should even bother driving down there...if the airports would be open or maybe flights delayed or canceled...

Counties, Cities Declare Disaster Emergencies
PITTSBURGH (KDKA)

Snowfall has caused Allegheny County to declare a disaster emergency.

Snow continues to fall in western Pennsylvania forcing Allegheny and Westmoreland Counties to declare a disaster emergency as a result.

According to a press release from the county, the disaster emergency was declared at 6:30 a.m. due to the severe weather conditions and heavy snow that has been falling since Friday afternoon.

Approximately 80,000 residencies in Allegheny County are currently without power and many roads are impassable as power lines and trees continue to fall.

The county is also asking for all non-essential and non-emergency vehicles to remain off the roads so that Public Works crews, power companies and emergency responders can get where they need to be.

41. My Neighbor measured 20 inches, NWS says 28, for Johnstown, see map
Edited on Sat Feb-06-10 12:08 PM by happyslug
National Weather Service Map on the snow fall:
ttp://www.erh.noaa.gov/ctp/features/snowmaps/index.php?tab=recent

Some of this will weigh itself down for example here is the Web Cam for the Laurel Mountain Trail, it shows just under 2 feet of snow (It had about 1/2 foot before the storm:
http://www.paccsa.org/webcam.htm

Yet the National Weather service says 29.5 inches feel on the trail. The reason for the difference is the NWS has very strict methods to measure snow fall, and those methods do NOT permit the snow to accumulate so no compression occurs in the snow measured by the NWS (as far as the measuring of snow fall, when snow pack is measured the snow is measure as it lays on the ground).

The above is a well known error in the system, but given that compression of snow works over time, measuring the snow fall and then wiping the instrument off gives us a better background then if we just measure the snow over and over again (The Compression of Snow as it accumulates increase as the amount of snow on the ground increases). Just a comment on why the NWS has Chestnut Ridge at 29.5 while the marker is showing just a little less then two feet on the ground.

Other NWS Maps on the Snow fall in PA (please note this is measure the snow as if it melted and was rain, thus the low numbers):

http://www.erh.noaa.gov/ctp/coop/precip/rainfall.htm

Snow Fall so far this winter. 2009-2010 (This is measurement of Actual Snow Fall):
