And this was under Truman. I am amazed that Republicans are considered fiscally conservative and good for business.

The economy has also done consistently better under Democratic presidents -- inflation, unemployment, GDP etc.

The myth of Republicans being good for the economy mystifies me.

1. Just do a search by president about jobs +/-, or the deficit increased or decreased
and you will find the same story. I have read that it is supposed that Republican presidents leave a big deficit to prevent Democrats from passing social programs. Imagine what Obama could have done if the economy would have been in halfway decent shape when he took office.

6. Well, if we are measuring national debt as a percentage of GDP, the claim in the OP is incorrect.
Based on the chart you posted, the national debt went down as a percentage of GDP during the 106th Congress (Jan 3, 1999 – Jan 3, 2001) when Republicans had majorities in both houses.

Claiming that "the last time a Republican Congress decreased the national debt was in 1947" would be inaccurate when measuring the national debt as a percentage of GDP.

My initial post was just to see if the original claim would be better or worse if one were to look back at the national debt during Democratic controlled Congresses. I thought the person who started this thread might have looked that up to compare to the statistic for Republican Congresses.

7. Please send to Keith and Rachel. and Wolf and Rush and Hannity.
And all the pundits you can think of. Dare one of them to report on this. But why should they do the work that the Dems ought to be doing themselves?
