Think again..

http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_daily_dish/2010/02/one-last-word.html

If you are one of those people who think this person cannot become president of the United States, think again.
Two lines stood out for me. The first is a sign that she believes and her followers believe that she has a divine destiny. She is Esther, with a touch of martyrdom:
"I will live, I will die for the people of America."
The second was the Dolchstoss attack on the duly elected president of the United States:
"We need a commander-in-chief not a professor of law."
These two potent messages - delegitimizing Obama as "the other" and as a weak-kneed traitor to the troops, and casting herself as the avatar of the real America, ready to die for its survival - are political gold. Most politicians in liberal democracies she somewhat from stating them so obviously, because they clearly invoke certain, shall we say, non-democratic forms. Not she.
The media, too scared be tarred as elitists, will never demand policy specifics from her; there is a huge constituency out there (rightly) outraged by Washington corruption and she now has the critical mantle of the rogue outsider; she can channel Christianism and fuse it with the slogans of phony "fiscal conservatism"; she will blame every lost job on Obama; and she will accuse him of betraying the troops and befriending America's enemies. Behind her are the Cheneyites.
Above all, she is capable of generating a personality cult - much, much more so than Obama, because she can harness Christianism to her divine destiny. The power of this kind of appeal - of a charismatic, beautiful woman, an icon of the pro-life cause, persecuted by the evil elites, demonized by libruls, and commanding the biggest military on earth - should not in my view be under-estimated.
Know fear.

She has no chance at the Republican nomination, never mind the Presidency.

2. Well, she didn't win last time around, and she apparently

has been drinking from the stupid again.

She will be a sucker candidate: somebody so bad that she will be replaced with a seemingly *sane GOP in shining armor.

*Sane here is just comparative to junk science Sarah. Bait 'n switch.

3. Oh, I agee she shouldn't be underestimated! However, I have mostly Pub
relatives, and at a breakfast, they were talking aboutt the election and how they didn't like a Dem in the WH. McCain was a war hero, and we are at WAR! My totally non political husband who never enters an argument about politics, simply looked at all of them and said "So you would have preferred Sarah as your Pressdidnt?" The silence was astinushing! Not one more word was mentioned about politics the rest of the day!

We;re talkong about my BIL who is an ex Marine (served 23 years( and is now a corp. VP, another BIL who is now retired, but worked in Sr, Mgmt. at Westinghouse Electric and was in the union until he was promoted into mgmt. The others are of similar backgrounds, and all staunch members of the NRA. Not a group of sloiches. ????sarah is entertaining I guess, but there are way too many people who would NEVER vote for her!

4. Andrew Sullivan is obsessed with SP.
He has dedicated essays towards the "trig is not SP's child" conspiracy. Look at the demographic in that room tonight,
white and middle aged or older. This is a great big, diverse country with serious concerns about security, economics,
ecology, immigration, and on and on. Does anyone for a moment think this woman could survive a presidential campaign
and all that entails, including debates? I know we should never underestimate the ignorance of the public, but once in a while
the opposite holds true, the American people as a whole see through her. They were wise enough to elect Obama after learning
what eight years of a George Bush did to the country.

Sarah Palin is a huge distraction. I want to know why the media is putting lipstick on THIS pig. What principles of the Shock Doctrine
are being applied here to distract us from other political events in the works.

... If I were a TV exec, I'd cover it too. No larger conspiracy required (though one may still be present)

26. No, I think he was deriding the PEEP show
quality of it. I do, too. Do you have another point of view? I find it very sad. We don't have TV but when I travel for business and all they have is a limited selection, I see mostly: bizarre plastic surgery shows; male / female bitch-slap shows; and some channel that rolls over and over, in a non-intellectual format, shows about little people, conjoined twins. It seems sadly exhibitionistic to me - is there another point of view you could share that would enlighten?

31. No I call these shows freak shows.
Not the same thing. People who watch these shows have the same motivation as those who would attend the side show at Barnum, to see conjoined twins, bearded ladies, deformed people and little people.

Yes, I call on TLC, Discovery and now Animal Planet of doing the same exact thing with their "educational" shows.

These shows are freak shows. Period.

9. Ronald Reagan at least made a pretense at being smart.
Also, he didn't have a history of fuckups like Palin does--and Reagan did not come up in the age of electronic media, where your fuckups can be broadcast to the world at a moment's notice.

35. Reagan was able to speak in complete sentences.
I defy you to find ANY instance where Sarah Palin has done so.

Also, Reagan was old, doddering, and easy to handle for the evil forces behind the curtain. Sarah doesn't like being handled--the powers that be will not like that.

Stop trying to compare the two--if YouTube had existed in Reagan's day, he'd have had a much tougher time getting elected.

17. In order for me to believe she could ever become president I need somebody to explain to me...
...how she would ever survive the Republican primaries. She will likely be facing two successful former governors (Romney and Huckabee), who will hammer away at her ineptitude at every possible opportunity. Not only that, but Palin really IS a rogue. Bush was selected because he was Cheney's willing puppet. Palin is too unstable and unpredictable to be useful to the GOP.
They want somebody who will be a good puppet, like Romney or Huck.
Palin will be the raving lunatic candidate, who will be beaten by the GOP's knight in shining armor, somebody like Romney or Huck, who will try to 'save' the party.

For the record, I would rather have 50 years under Romney or Huck than just one under Palin. She is a complete nutcase, and even the GOP establishment must realize this. She's useful to get the base fired up, but she will be tossed under the bus at the first opportunity. I'm sure they have it planned out already.

That doesn't go away. TeaBaggers got pissed off and had a miniriot when she was late for a book signing. She's got a solid 20% at most.

I wish people would remember that the TeaBaggers are a lobbyist creation.

The real movement to watch is the one that gathers around the Cuomo-Barofsky lawsuit against
BofA in New York State. It's just the first of others to follow. Real justice for the
financial creeps that ruined the economy. That's what people want.

btw, I'll bet no more than 10T of the electorate knows who the Hell Ester is.

Because you're right, she can't win the GOP nod, but she can win a 3rd party nod, and if the Glenn Beck's and Rush Limbaughs line up behind her, be very alert.

I don't think we should be afraid, but don't deny the fact that this woman is dumb, egotistical, and a true believer. That is a very DANGEROUS combination of faults.

you are seriously being played. There are some out there who will, likely, get the nomination who are receiving no attention, right now. They are not even on the radar screen of any but the most powerful. And they will kick our ass if we don't start producing some results for the guy on Main Street.

It's time to quit paying attention to Palin and get about the business of helping the American people. I don't expect it to happen but that's what it's going to take to win elections right now.

37. Duh. This country elected Bush.
Sure, we didn't elect him in 2000 - but does't the fact that it was even close enough that one county in Florida could determine the outcome already prove that we're a nation of idiots?

As a Texan who watched him for years, and who scoffed at the idea that he could ever even win a primary, MUCH LESS become the nominee, MUCH LESS become president, certainly after the rest of the country saw his cynicism, cronyism, fake morality, and inability to speask the English language... I have to say... I think a Palin presidency is not at all impossible.

I have a good friend who calls herself a conservative. I don't quite get it because she doesn't strike me as conservative at all. She is well educated and can NOT stand Palin.

She voted for Obama because she couldn't stand the thought of Palin anywhere near the White House.

Make no mistake-one reason Obama won in 2008 is because many conservatives or rethugs voted AGAINST Palin.

Frankly, I think all this Sarah Palin shit on DU today is nothing more that fear mongering-by dems.
