There is nothing wrong with having notes of key points when you're
making a speech or giving an interview. Nothing wrong with writing them on your palm (a little tacky) or having an index card. The best of speakers get nervous and can lose their train of thought.

Let's stick to the main tent here and avoid the sideshow...it was what Sarah said not whether she had notes. Her speech was frightening.

3. Exactly why this is a story.
She stepped into it when she brought up the telepromter.

13. And she read her speech from paper notes while at the podium.
Which is more directly relevant to the bogus 'teleprompter' smear. But not Nearly as funny.

4. How did you get that from my post? I was basically supporting anyone's
use of notes or a prompter. I was pointing out that it was the SUBSTANCE of her sheech, not how she made it that was awful.

11. Fail.
Hipchick wasn't accusing you of attacking the President. Sheesh.

Also, where were you when we WERE DISCUSSING THE SUBSTANCE OF THE SPEECH? And, how do you conclude (especially if you watched it) that there was any SUBSTANCE to her speech to discuss? The consensus around here is that her speech was jumbled and, at times, incoherent. It was bad high school student council material. It was typical Sarah Palin tripe.

So, what is it you want to discuss?

2. Well said.
I've given scores of speeches and occasionally I'll jot a thought on my palm - a key one that I don't want to forget.

while needing her own crib notes.

The issue is the hypocrisy, not her use of notes.

Plus, she's an idiot.

I've given speeches, as I'm sure many of us on DU have. Bringing along a nice outline is one thing. For a Republican to have to write this on her hand is pretty funny. Here's a few more:

Reagan, Freedom, Drill Baby Drill
Terror, Terror, Reagan
Socialist, Hussein, Pelosi

Edited on Sun Feb-07-10 12:19 PM by MindPilot
She's a former governor and possibly in line for the highest office in the land; her public speaking skills should be way beyond needing notes. And writing them on her hand is kid stuff. It is not really about who she is or how much she knows, it is about a skill level that is fundamental to her position.

The basic function of the Teleprompter is not to remember the speech; most speeches are read anyway. It's to be able to read the speech and still look at the camera or maintain eye contact with the audience.

20. Anytime a 40 something wannabe politician has to write
three key themes on her hand as if she was in junior high school - it's a problem. It's a problem that she can't remember three key themes. Oh, let me check my notes

So she wants to be the President? She actually believes someone who had months to prepare for this speech and has to write notes on her hand is Presidential material. She's delusional.

she looked drained, tired and aging rapidly. I saw pics of people in the audience and some looked disgusted. I don't think Palin delivered for them and maybe they are thinking the same.

When someone gets paid $100k to share their knowledge and expertise, they should know their subject cold.

Or at least do what George Bush did and have an earpiece.

25. Her speech seemed like standard Republican boiler plate
but maybe I should read it because everything she says sounds like Charlie Brown's teacher to me.

What I did notice last night was that the applause lines were roughly timed at the same interval as one verse in common meter, which is used in hymms. So, her speech writer knew the audience was already trained to respond at that beat and exploited that. But that's probably nothing new, either.

The most difficult thing she did was try to straddle the line which encourages pissed off teabaggers but also nudges them back into the GOP fold. Some of these people are only slightly more pissed at the Democrats than they are at the Republican Party.

27. No, this is actually the most important part of the Palin event.
The general public has a short attention span, and lives in pictures and sound bites. They didn't see or hear her speech, and never will.

But they can all grasp a picture of Palin with words cribbed onto her hand. All but the koolaid drinkers will think this makes her a moron, so that's a win.

28. what might be ok for, say, a businessman speaking to the local jaycees isn't necessarily ok if
you're stumping yourself for the presidency of the United States. Don't think I've seen anybody at that level write shit on their hands. So if nothing else it's pretty funny.

Besides, as others have pointed out, she ridiculed the president for his use of a teleprompter, so that irony is just too much to pass up.

30. Kick and Recommend.
Tempest in a Teacup (intended)

Most Americans WILL find this endearing.
Remember, 1/2 of the population is below average, and writing notes on their hand is something they have done, and can relate to.... It "humanizes" the monster that is Sarah Palin.

The CONTENT (or lack of) should be the focus, NOT her appearance, performance, or use of notes.
Attacking THAT will be LESS than productive. It WILL produce "blowback" and further entrenchment.
The "notes" are barely worth mentioning.
The fact that THIS is dominating DU is not a good thing.
