Power plant explosion in CT (breaking news)
by Deep Harm
Sun Feb 07, 2010 at 09:50:03 AM PST

Minutes ago, Hartford Courant and CNN reported an explosion with "mass casulaties" at a gas-fired power plant (Kleen Power Plant) in Middletown, Connecticut.

The blast happened about 11:30 a.m. Sunday at the Kleen Power Plant in Middletown, a suburb of Hartford.
The plant's general manager, Gordon Holk, confirmed the blast caused casualties, but wasn't sure how many.

On Twitter, NYCscanner reports " 100+ victims, 4 critical, 2 doa doz of ambulace & choppers enroute."

The Kleen plant is pictured here http://kleenenergy.com/ on the company website. The project was described as 2008's "North American Single Asset Power Deal of the Year. http://www.eifgroup.com/graphics/FINAL%20EIF%20ReprintNP.pdf"

RR_LiveAudio has online emergency scanner audio http://www.radioreference.com/apps/audio/?feedId=3426 . There has been little traffic, however, on that channel, suggesting that emergency responders may be using another channel, possibly one that is encrypted. (I once did police/fire dispatch.)

UPDATE, from CNN:

Two people have been confirmed dead, said Middletown, Connecticut, police Sgt. Chuck Jacobucci, but authorities expect the number to rise since they are still searching for people.
More than 100 emergency service units, including fire, police and emergency management, were responding, he said.

Middlesex Hospital in Middletown, about 15 miles from Hartford, Connecticut, said it was receiving patients from the blast, which occurred about 11:30 a.m. at the Kleen Power Plant.
CNN affiliate WTNH-TV cited reports that houses near the plant had been damaged by the blast. The station reported the explosion was felt in towns as far as 15 miles from Middletown.

1. I'm listening to the scanner audio
It seems to be active with a fire dept. emergency command.

3. Oh shit!
We were in Middletown just last night. And this is the first I've heard of this, since I was in church all morning.

My goodness... Do they have any idea yet why it happened? Those poor people!

4. The "Kleen" Power Plant?
Is their motto "We put the 'K' in quality"?
