Paulson and Greenspan say that deficits are nation's biggest economic problem.
Edited on Sun Feb-07-10 02:00 PM by kentuck
On Meet the Press with David Gregory, Paulson was asked if he thought the Bush taxcuts should be allowed to expire. He responded that this would be a tax increase and that would be bad for our economy at the present time. Greenspan responded that we would need to raise taxes and cut spending to bring the deficits under control. Neither of them directly said that the Bush tax cuts should be allowed to expire.

So why not let the taxcuts expire and also, cut off the money that employers and employees pay to insurance companies. That should be about $300-400 billion per year. That would equal $3-$4 trillion dollars over the next 10 years. This would be like a taxcut for employers and companies needing to hire or invest in new jobs.

The Congress could then take this $300-$400 billion per year and create a single payer system for those folks not covered and also save the Medicare program with any extra money. Of course, that would mean a massive loss to the insurance companies. But it would be a worthwhile swap off. That is one way to bring down the deficits, create more jobs, and save the Medicare system.

Of course, they would call it socialism. And they would be right. But it would be so much better than what we now have.

3. I think the Shelby issue is related to reducing the deficit
Refusing Republican pork and allowing the tax cuts for the wealthy to expire is a start on deficit reduction.

One way or the other, by force or voluntarily, the Republicans will participate in balancing the budget. No votes required.

5. As Cheney said, deficits dont matter
.... as long as its deficits created by giving tax breaks to the wealthy by the GOP.

Deficits created by the Democrats righting the gross inequities created by the GOP giving tax breaks to the wealthy always matter to these traitors.

10. wait -- greenspan, the man who said the SURPLUS was our biggest problem?
so here's the man who sent alarm bells through congress at the start of shrub's reign of error, crying about how running a surplus every year would lead to us paying off the ENTIRE NATIONAL DEBT, and THEN, OMG!!!!111!! what would we do????

greenspan couldn't POSSIBLY entertain the thought that congress would find a way to piss away all of clinton's savings and then some, even though it would have taken decades to pay down the entire national debt even assuming we never had another recession. and the though that eventually, the surplus couldn't be used to pay down debt because we no longer had any, meant that a surplus required the federal government to just plain save money or invest it in commercial paper or something.

so a-scared of that possibility that he urged congress to pass one of the largest and most irresponsible tax cuts in history.

and THIS man is now telling us that DEFICITS are a problem?

screw you, greenie.
