Anger may be deciding factor in party loyalty
Anger may be deciding factor in party loyalty

Anxiety and anger shroud this year's pivotal elections in Ohio and the nation, causing uncertainty among politicians and their parties about how to approach independents and voters looking for something different.

Not since the 1992 presidential election, when billionaire independent Ross Perot captured almost 19 percent of the popular vote with warnings about America's decline, has there been more churn in the electorate, evidenced by the rise of the Tea Party movement.

Feeling disenfranchised by a political system viewed as indifferent to the struggles of common people and disillusioned by a federal government seemingly bereft of fiscal sanity, many voters are searching for a home beyond the two major parties, which have been increasingly marginalized by embracing their opposite ideological extremes.

Notably, the Republican National Committee recently discussed whether to require candidates seeking its support to pass a "purity test" on policy questions.

On the other side, some observers think Democratic state Rep. Jennifer Garrison was forced from the secretary of state's race because her anti-abortion position and previous attacks on gay marriage riled the party's liberal base.

2. I want to bring up something...
Food for thought...

Hitler's movement started out as a Fringe movement, a far, far right movement. It was steeped in anger against Jews, the loss of WWI and other perceived indignations perpetuated against the German people. Hitler had no real plan but his movement picked up steam and the existing German government ignored them to their own peril. Hitlers people were placed in the German government and eventually took over the government. Corporations sided with Hitler in the takeover over the government because they could make more profit....sound familiar..

What we are seeing with Palin is the same thing, anger against minorities for having the nerve to be educated and successful. Anger at Republican losses in Congress, anger against the Muslim world. Corporations now able to funnel more money into the political process.....The media is corrupt and is pushing the meme that the tea party movement is significant...

Do NOT take this lightly..and do not dismiss them. Think about it, if we allow candidates from this extreme movement to start winning seats because we neglected them, they will be able to actively destroy this country from the inside. If you want proof just look at the * administration and the Supreme Court for a sample of things to come....

She should have disappeared off of the radar months ago and yet here she is .......

5. I'm afraid you're right and folks wonder why "history" is
mandatory in the school curriculum. What's also amazing is that we'll sit back and watch it happen!

7. Our Corporate controlled-media has Palin on 24/7
Which is really weird, as she has no "there there"

But the Powers that Be must have a reason for this.

A poll done not too long ago showed that only 27% of All Republicans liked Palin. Since the Republicans currently are only 24% or s of all American, this meant that abbout seven and a half percent of all Americans were fans of hers.

IF we still had a free media, she probably would have disappeared a long time ago.

But everything in our Banana Republic is about the Corporate and MIC control of this nation.

3. emotion affects how people vote on both sides
Edited on Sun Feb-07-10 02:41 PM by booley
it seems too often this is news to progressives even though we are just as prone to it.

It's unlikely we would have mobilized so well in 2006 and 2008 if there hadn't been so much anger against bush

it played a part in democrats voting for a faux populist like brown.

and it will plague Obama if he's seen as ignoring his earlier promises.

and yes teabaggers are affected this way too

This is a fact of human nature and can be good or bad.

8. The media have one primary task before all others...
They have to deliver an audience for their corporate sponsors. Before truth; before integrity; before dignity; they must deliver consumers to advertisers.

Sarah Palin leads because Sarah Palin "bleeds": She's a walking disaster, so she makes good entertainment, and American television viewers have proven there is nothing more they like better than entertainment. This is why news organizations like CNN instantly become the all-Balloon-Boy-all-the-time network; this is why Keith Olbermann cut off Ariana Huffington for "breaking news" on Balloon Boy--they know the audience expects it, and they can't deliver what their sponsors expect without delivering what their audience expects.

So, expect the media to play to the anger. Expect networks like Fox News and MSNBC to feed and nurture the anger. It's good infotainment--it's good for business.

As far as the parties? They're obsolete, so any purity tests they may impose are the seeds of their own destruction. The number of unaffiliated voters is larger than the membership of either party. The Democratic Party made it easy for me to become and unaffiliated democratic voter more than ten years ago with its shift to the Right. A "purity drive" will just cause people like me to abandon the party completely. Not for the Republican Party or Republican candidates, but for an alternative to the lesser-of-two-evils system we currently have.

Both parties are cancers destroying this country. A purity test given by a disease?

9. WTF? Being pro-choice and pro-gay rights is "fringe"?
Somehow we have to break reporters of their habit of assuming there are two equal sides to every story.
