South Carolina Now Requires Terrorists to Register, Pay $5 Fee

Osama bin Laden will now have to register to live in South Carolina

There’s pay-to-play, referring to the money-driven nature of our political system, and now there’s pay-to-overthrow, thanks to a new law on the books in South Carolina. Whether it’s al-Qaeda, Hamas, or even an American fascist group, all terrorists operating in South Carolina now must register with the Secretary of State’s and pay a $5 fee. If they don’t and are caught plotting the destruction of the United States, terrorists could be subject to $25,000 fine and up to 10 years in prison.

The Subversive Activities Registration Act applies to “every member of a subversive organization, or an organization subject to foreign control, every foreign agent and every person who advocates, teaches, advises or practices the duty, necessity or propriety of controlling, conducting, seizing or overthrowing the government of the United States ....”

Islamic terrorists may have been first and foremost on the minds of lawmakers who passed the law. But the statute would also apply to domestic organizations who call for the downfall of the American political system.

2. 'also apply to domestic organizations who call for the downfall of the American political system.'
Does FOX snooze have to pay for each of its employees, just on-air personalities, or one fee for the whole organization?

3. This is my favorite story of the day!
I was getting a little sick of all the Sarah threads.
And this coming from South Carolina, of all places, the first state to secede from the Union.
I wonder what happens when someone actually does register?

5. I think I'll register, just for the hell of it....
Maybe I'll register the cats, too. I can't wait until the FBI agents show up at the door: "Sir, is, um, Mango here? We'd like to ask him some questions."

Is this the Tea Bagger Registration Act?

8. Ambiguous wording leads to unintended results

First question: who defines "subversive"? Is the campus socialist club subversive? How about the IWW?

Second: "organizations subject to foreign control" could include the Catholic church, which is led by the Vatican--a foreign nation. (This was one reason JFK was such a controversial candidate: would he be loyal to America, or to the Vatican?)

Third: what exactly constitutes a "foreign agent"? Will people with dual citizenship have to register? How about people who qualify for dual citizenship, for instance a child of parents who immigrated from Ireland and became US citizens? (That child qualifies for Irish citizenship, so is a potential dual citizen.)

Fourth: advocating "controlling or conducting" the government is pretty vague and sounds like what every politician, political action group, and political party does.

There seem to be too many ways this could go terribly wrong.
