12. It's never about the OWNERS at a time like this.
Edited on Sun Feb-07-10 10:11 PM by Ken Burch
Although that's actually a good thing about being a Green Bay Packers fan(which I'm not, but still.)

The Packers are a municipally-owned franchise.

That's right...Vince Lombardi and Bart Starr were working(whether they meant to be or not)for the glory of the socialist cause!
(That's a fun thing to say to a Wisconsin Republican if you want to see her or his head explode through their cheese hat.)

25. Are there any Democrats on the Colts?
Edited on Sun Feb-07-10 10:43 PM by Ken Burch
It's actually fairly unusual for athletes to have left-of-center politics(people like Kareem Abdul Jabar, Muhammad Ali, Dave Meggyesy(the only player ever cut from an NFL team because of his politics) and Sonny Sixkiller(the University of Washington quarterback who joined the rest of his team in delaying the opening of the second half of the 1972 Spring Alumni Game until the PA announcer read a team statement opposing the Vietnam War)have been the exception rather than the rule.

Remember how the GOP made sure Curt Schilling was out on the hustings for Dubbikins immediately after the 2004 Red Sox World Series victory in order to prevent Sox fan John Kerry from getting any bounce out of that event.

(edited because I realized I was probably going a bit too far about what Indianapolis is like).

16. True. But to me it was more about the city of New Orleans, a Dem city, badly
in need of some inspiration and hope. The fans there seem to be the best in the NFL and this win was for them.

Im happy for them because theyve had it rough.
But i could care less that they are a dem city. As a huge sports fan, i never mix it with my politics. God, one of my favorite figures in Football History, Joe Gibbs, spoke at the Republican Convention this year and is in love with God way too much. But he is still a legend to me for DC.

All I heard about was Dubya sitting in the owner's box at Cowboys Stadium. Two weeks ago, Fox showed Poppy and Babs in the owner's box at the Superdome, "guests of owner Tom Benson." You can't mix politics and sports.

20. No...
New England is owned by Robert Kraft, who has given to Republicans - but mostly supports Democrats. The Steelers owner turned out to be a big Obama supporter. Arthur Blank of the Falcons is fairly Democratic. Jim Irsay of the Colts has given to Democrats, so hardly a right-winger. That's just off the top of my head.

Which is why they're trying to break the players' union again.
Thing I've never understood is this...why do so many people bitch about player salaries when none of them EVER complain about how insanely rich the OWNERS get?

The players are overpaid, but at least they actually DO something for the money. All the damn owners do is sit in luxury boxes and scream at people. And half the time they're deliberately trying to make their teams worse so they can sell them to somebody else.

Really, we need municipal ownership for ALL professional sports franchises.

It would change the dynamic of the franchises, it would require them to give something back to the community in exchange for all the community gives to THEM(at the moment, pro sports is the ONLY industry anywhere that gets all its infrastructure build at public expense)and would make it possible for more of the community to actually be able to afford to see the games.

I know it's not gonna happen anytime soon, but it would cut the arrogance and the aristocracy factor down by a megaton.

But why did it take God so long?

I suppose Manning is going to get religion now to offset any possible favoritism by God.

Especially St. Augustine, who had a lot of issues with this aspect of the Church's teachings.

32. How sweet it is
August 29, 2005, New Orleans was devastated by Katrina and an aloof Republicon evangelical controlled government. Three years later they brought this nation to the brink of financial collapse, near depression or worse.

Ring in 2009 under new leadership, a working government and now a proud city supporting their team, the New Orleans Saints.

It's also sweet b/c I made a straight-up bet on the game with a Rep. friend. How sweet it will be to take money from this often backwards un-American person.

If Britney Spears can party it up in Vegas with one of her boys and go get married on a whim and annul her marriage the next day, why can't a loving same sex couple tie the knot? How could our society grant more rights to a heterosexual one night stand wedding in Vegas than a gay couple that has been together for 3, 5, 10 years of true love?
