"If a man walks in the woods for love of them half of each day, he is in danger of being regarded as a loafer. But if he spends his days as a speculator, shearing off those woods and making the earth bald before her time, he is deemed an industrious and enterprising citizen." - Henry David Thoreau

10. Powell only had one arm - he lost the other in the Civil War..
and he rode the Colorado River rapids in a wooden boat with one arm, no helmets and no life jacket.. talk about one tough guy.

13. That was a good series.
It's amazing how much we'd probably be missing if not for the protection championed by a few.

14. I reflect on that often
I travel throughout the U.S. for work and I am so thankful for the 'wilds' and for the communal areas that have been established for the public. I truly wish that more of our coastline and more of our forests were preserved, but I am thankful for what we have. I hope that we work for continued preservation.

15. O dreamy, gloomy, friendly Trees
O dreamy, gloomy, friendly Trees,
I came along your narrow track
To bring my gifts unto your knees
And gifts did you give back;
For when I brought this heart that burns--
These thoughts that bitterly repine--
And laid them here among the ferns
And the hum of boughs divine,
Ye, vastest breathers of the air,
Shook down with slow and mighty poise
Your coolness on the human care,
Your wonder on its toys,
Your greenness on the heart's despair,
Your darkness on its noise.

(Frederic) Herbert Trench (1865-1923)

Thanks for posting that Thoreau quote, first time I've seen it. His book will go on my to read list. Thought you might like the poem.
