Stimulus money may save burned Texas Governor's Mansion

While Gov. Rick Perry is criticizing Washington bailouts, state lawmakers are planning to use $11 million in federal stimulus money to help rebuild the badly burned Texas Governor's Mansion.

Top budget negotiators said Thursday that a House-Senate committee agreed on the expenditures late Wednesday night.

Around $10 million in state tax money will also be spent on the renovation of the mansion, which was badly burned in an arson fire last summer.

Asked if Perry approved of using federal money for the mansion, House Appropriations Committee Chairman Jim Pitts said: "He just wanted it done." Perry spokeswoman Allison Castle released a short, written statement late Thursday saying only that work on the budget was continuing.

3. How many people do you think they'll hire to fix the mansion?
Carpenters, electricians, plumbers, roofers and flooring people, and maybe masons as well.

No, not the best use of the money, but it will end up in the local economy and in the hands of local workers. They can't outsource the actual construction to be done in another country, and I'll bet they get a good bit of the materials locally (from somewhere in Texas, anyway).

It's stimulus money. Its only going to provide a few jobs for a little while anyway, no matter where it's spent.

4. I'm of two minds on this.
These tend to be historic buildings, and should be preserved. And there will be people employed to do it.

Could it be put to better use? Probably, but I feel that way about almost every budget expenditure I see these days.
