I was researching something and found this – an old book from 1815 – a few decades after the signing of our Declaration of Independence.
It’s a book written by an attorney to help businessmen and farmers know more about how to handle everyday occurrences and possibly to help people write up their own simple legal documents (in plain language) to save fees.
The parts that caught my attention have everything to do with the early days of our government and it is all there – the good parts – logic, organization, concern – coming together to think and agree on ways of doing everday things - benefiting all.
The book is written for all states, but includes some information about one particular state where the book was published.
The gun rule states that no person can carry a gun on property not owned by them without written permission. Fine 40 shillings. (they used ‘penalty’ instead of ‘fine, and define the money in shillings and dollars).
Another rule under Estrays (meaning strays -cattle, horses, sheep) says that anyone finding an estray betweeen November 1 and April 1 will notify the clerk of the township in writing with a description. If no one claims the lost animal by May 1 - or - if the owner refuses or neglects to pay the fees to the clerk for the stray, the stray will be sold and the monies appropriated to the use of the poor of the township.
Here is the exact wording for Paupers:
“A poor person, who has cause of action against another, and will verify his or her circumstances before the court by affidavit, may have a writ and counsel gratis.”
Here is the one on Travelling:
“All persons traveling, when met by another carriage, shall each turn to the right, or pay a fine of two dollars.”
Pedlars:
“No person shall follow the business of a pedlar, or engage in selling any goods, wares or merchandise, without a license from the governor of the state; and if this law is not observed, every person so offending shall be liable to a penalty of thirty dollars. In consideration of their privilege every pedlar traveling with a cart or wagon shall annually pay to the overseers of the poor two dollars, and if on foot sixty cents.”
There are more – all illustrating rules of living that expedite civility and remove the doubt about rights, but with recognition that the poor need support.
So the population explodes and there are more rules and exceptions, but life is the same. Add text messaging to our lives and the number of deaths and PEOPLE figure out how to address it.
PEOPLE have been taking care of each other all these years (for the most part) by coming up with workable solutions that don’t require extra costs for normalcy.
These teabaggers probably have a legislator or judge or clerk in their ancestry, but now our government is hateful?????
We must shake the teabaggers up so that their logic genes are re-activated by calling them on their claims of our horrible government.
Clean up what we don’t think is being done efficiently or fairly, or honestly, but don’t destroy our concept of government for stupid, utterly nonsensical, destructive political purposes with all the accompanying drama and lies.
Think about what they are doing to the heads and hearts of little children. Limbaugh, Palin, Armey, Tancredo - the child pedophiles of the mind?
