The Great Snow Hurricane of 2010: Update
The Great Snow Hurricane of 2010: Update
by Timaeus
Wed Feb 10, 2010 at 11:29:43 AM PST

Justin Berk, the weatherman for ABC's Channel 2 in Baltimore, has consistently been providing the best coverage of this latest blizzard. He is doing a better job of explaining the nature of the storm, by far, than The Weather Channel or other channels, and he has much more accurate snowfall totals...

SNIP

...One of Berk's most interesting themes all day is that this unusual storm is very close to becoming a very rare "snow hurricane." One of the defining characteristics of a Category One Hurrican is an internal low pressure of 980 millibars or less. The low now stuck off the Delaware coast is at 985 millibars and decreasing (that is, still strengthening) and it seems about to develop a clear "eye." That is exceedingly rare for a winter storm.

There is also some chance of the storm moving in a retrograde motion toward the west, at least for a little while. Right now big snow bands are coming off the ocean, swooping counterclockwise through southern Pennsylvania, and then continuing to clobber my area from the NW.)

At my place in western Carroll County, MD (about 30 miles NW of Baltimore) we've already had two feet of snow, it has been blizzard conditions all days, and it is still snowing hard. I think we'll probably get close to the 31 inches we had from the storm last Saturday.

We're having steady wind gusts of 30 or 35 mph. It's hard to tell whether the snow in the air is falling or blowing...

SNIP

...UPDATE: One of the best weather blogs is by Dr. Jeff Masters at the Weather Underground. Here is something he wrote early this morning about this current storm:

This new low is predicted to "bomb" into a mighty Nor'easter with a central pressure below 970 mb, the kind of pressure typically found in a Category 1 hurricane. http://www.wunderground.com/blog/JeffMasters/article.html

3. That's amazing...and very interesting!
I hope you are stocked up, and ready for this next round!

I'm in Iowa and we are used to lots of snow. This year has been horrible. Our kids
have missed seven days of school so far--and it's only February!

Have flashlights, batteries, a weather radio, battery backup for your 'puter and candles/matches
ready!

Sounds like you guys are about to get pummeled!

Take care!!

Out in the woods the trees have been really blowing here. The place is pretty tight, but Im feeling a draft from somewheres.
32 degrees F here.
Ch 12 out of Winston Salem is reporting 16,000 w/o power in Greensboro.
Some trees down blocking roads pulling down power lines and hit a house or two in W/S and Gso.
We have had a few flickers. We have our good ole kero stove and lamps, plus battery lights, a butane fired single burner jic, and food for several days if needed.
