We Need Filibuster Reform NOW
Edited on Thu Feb-11-10 01:49 PM by MadBadger
You know, I used to be on the other side of this. I used to think that if we do this now, it will just come back to bite us in the butt when we will be in the minority. But then I realized, we wouldnt filibuster, because this party is a bunch of (insert whatever word you want for pussies). Our leadership would say, that's not nice Republicans...and then relent like they always do. So what do we have to lose? And with all those Dino blue dogs, I'm not sure we even could filibuster anything if we ever grew a pair to do so.

SO yea,I think we there should be filibuster reform immediately. 51 votes, 55 votes, whatever. I dont care about the number, but 60 votes is bullshit.

1. I believe it is unconstitutional.
The founders clearly expected the legislative bodies to deliberate on a simple majority basis.

The seventeenth amendment states,"The Senate of the United States shall be composed of two Senators from each State, elected by the people thereof, for six years; and each Senator shall have one vote."

Now, if you have a vote, but not every vote is given the same weight, is that any different from regulating the number of votes? NO IT IS NOT. By essentially requiring a 60 vote bar for passage of any legislation, the Senate is applying different weight to the votes. A vote against the legislation is given more weight than a vote for.

2. Democrats did filibuster against Bush.
You may wish to review your history. The GOP screamed loudly about Democrats "blocking progress" as they called it. For now, the filibuster is a pain to us. The majority in congress swings back and forth, and the day will come when we are again in the minority for a while. And once again, we will use the filibuster to block the most extreme of their stuff.

3. In the long run our country would be better off without it.
One of the ways that you can establish what is good policy or not is by trial and error. A program is established, and then the people see what works and what doesn't. The program is then modified or scrapped all together. But with the Senate acting as a death valley for legislation, you don't have anything to work with in the first place.
