It is looking increasingly likely the GOP will win back the Senate this year. Funny thing is Bayh probably could have beat Dan Coats.

2. Hey the purists wanted all the centrists gone - this is a great chance
Put in a firebrand of the social and economic left and show us how it's done. I'll even send money I promise.

And, if unsuccessful, I am sure you will be able to demonstrate that Bayh would have voted the exact same way as the new GOP Senator since that's a claim often made.

One way or another, this is a great chance to test the DU claims that Blue Dogs are a cancer as harmful as Republicans and that pure progressives can win their seats.

Incidentally I hope they are right, as much as I doubt it. I would MUCH prefer a Saunders over a Coats. Not even close.

5. My former mayor Paul Helmke
In addition to being universally loved in Fort Wayne (Indiana's second biggest city), Mr Helmke is a well known gun control advocate. He is the president of Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.

6. This just in from TPM
Bayh talked to President Obama this morning about his decision not to seek reelection, a source close to Obama told TPMDC.

The source says Obama and Bayh have had "several conversations" about 2010 and the senator made his personal decision this weekend.

"It is personal not at all political - he is by nature a Governor not a Senator," the source said.

The source added that Bayh had been interested in something else at the end of this term since 2006 and noted Bayh's strong financial standing with $13 million in the bank and 20-point lead in the polls.
