Tamyra d'Ippolito: a last minute push to replace Evan Bayh with a real Democrat
Edited on Mon Feb-15-10 02:27 PM by t0dd

A cafe owner from Bloomington, she is seeking to be the Democratic candidate for Evan Bayh's senate seat.

The deadline to complete the filing process is this week. She needs 500 petition signatures in each of Indiana's nine House districts and is 1,000 votes short according to http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/02/another-dem-already-in-race-for-bayhs-seat----but-doesnt-have-the-needed-signatures-yet.php#more">TPM.

The Party Machine in IN is actively working against her signature efforts just to elect someone similar to Bayh that will have no chance in November. If elected, she might actually represent the people of Indiana instead of corporations. That concept is foreign to the blue dog infested establishment.

Just so you know, the Democratic heads in Indiana, there are 92 counties, they have been working against us all this time because they have been for the incumbent, Evan Bayh," said d'Ippolito. "So we are calling on them now - it was only Evan Bayh running as the Democratic candidate - and asking them what will they do now. So this does not give us much time.

On why she got involved with politics: "I became especially interested when I noticed how few women and minorities are involved in Indiana."

Let's look at her platform (http://tamyraforsenate.com):

Environment
Indiana is the most polluted state in the country. Lung cancer is rising among non-smokers. If you fish Indiana’s waterways you have to worry about feeding your catch to your family due to mercury contamination. We must do better. The solution is the greening of Indiana. This will create jobs, improve our health and leave a better world for generations to come. We must harness the winds in the north and solar energy in the south. We must encourage conservation and alternative energy use through tax incentives and rebates for homes and businesses.

Real health care reform is an important issue for her. She was diagnosed with colon cancer five years ago and could not obtain health insurance because of a pre-existing condition: "As a cancer survivor and small business owner, health reform is an issue that directly affects me like many Indiana residents."

Health care
As of now, the final provisions of the Healthcare Bill are being negotiated. Let’s hope that we all benefit by lower costs and improved quality. But if this is just another give away to insurance and pharmaceutical companies, I will not rest until we have a healthcare system that works for all of us.

Concentration of Wealth
The bank bailouts and the healthcare debate highlight a dangerous threat to American democracy and the American way of life. Those who spend millions to buy politicians call the shots. Any real reforms are gutted or stopped. You think a $45.00 fee is too much for being $1.00 overdrawn? Thank the banks your tax dollars saved from oblivion. You think you should be able to order prescription drugs from Canada? Thank the pharmaceutical companies who are making deals with your elected representatives. I am not opposed to wealth but I am opposed to the misuse of wealth. I am committed to an American democracy that works for all of us, not just a few.

Poverty
Poverty is a huge issue I hold close to my heart. One third of Hoosiers live in poverty. In some pockets the rate of poverty is even higher. In Bloomington, Indiana, where I live, 41.6% of people live in poverty. I created www.thepoorclub.org to address the problems caused by privatization of services to poor Hoosiers. We must create and strengthen programs for job creation, low income housing, and legal and medical services to the poor.

We need a real Democrat like this in Congress. She has until tomorrow to gather enough signatures to make the primary. Unfortunately, Indiana Democrats are seeking to nominate another worthless blue dog like Bayh. You can download a petition for state primary ballot placement http://www.bloomingtononline.net/directory/docs/413.pdf">here.

4. Her heart may be in the right place, but ...
I'm sorry to have to say this: she would be creamed if she became the nominee. She has literally no experience and has never run for an office before. So while I might agree with her goals, if I were an Indianan (and I was indeed born and bred there, though no longer live there), I would not want her to be the candidate. It would be like handing the seat to the Republican. It's a conservative state to begin with, but having a well-meaning but unlikely to be elected candidate is self-defeating.

6. And having a blue dog that votes with Republicans is better how exactly?
Edited on Mon Feb-15-10 02:05 PM by t0dd
The only choices shouldn't be "elect a Republican" or "elect the reincarnation of Evan Bayh". I'd rather take the chance and have an actual Democrat lose.

15. Like Bayh himself, I can see you'd like to see the Democrat lose.
And you'll get your wish. I hope you like it.

12. That's what they would have you think -
but when those same blue dogs prevent any progressive legislation from being brought to the floor, does it make any real difference?

did we get a corporate giveaway health care bill presented because of republicans or because of blue dogs? Where is the DEMOCRATIC health care bill?

You do not need to be in contact with the campaign to get signatures. Just print http://ow.ly/17yRC">this form, get signatures of registered voters on it, and get it turned in to your county clerk’s office by noon tomorrow (February 16). She especially needs signatures from the 8th District. If Tamyra D’Ippolito is on the ballot, then that's all there is to it.

11. That's what they said about Scott Brown too. Why doesn't the same
work for our side? Let me guess, you'd rather an "electable" blue dog be the nominee?

14. Do you live in Indiana?
I do. I may have some idea of what goes on here.

In fact, they were recently recruiting for the KKK again. Do you think that would be happening if there wasn't an active audience for that crap here?

Obama, for whom I actively campaigned, won by a very narrow margin. With the exception of the metro areas, Indiana is as redneck and ignorant as you can get.

Mitch Daniels -- who is trying to outsource, sell and privatize the government -- it the governor.

You think they are going to elect a liberal in this state? Bayh had a long career in this state because he was what the residents in this state will vote for.

Excuse me for being practical.

Edited on Mon Feb-15-10 03:20 PM by t0dd
"You think they are going to elect a conservative in MA? HA!"

Your "practicality" is harmful to actually moving the party farther to the left. I like Democrats that actually support progressive principles..

18. I do like this.
If I were in Indiana, I would sign.
Good Luck to her.
The ONLY chance America has of moving toward a government that represents the Working Class is by running candidates who are OUTSIDE the "Centrist" Democratic Party Power Structure.

Otherwise Bayh gets replaced by another Bayh.

The Democratic Party is a BIG TENT, but there is NO ROOM for those
who advance the agenda of THE RICH (Corporate Owners) at the EXPENSE of LABOR and the POOR.

20. Brave to put up someone who worked on Wall Street for so long, in this climate
In 1981, jobs were limited in Indiana so I moved to Houston, Texas and worked for over 3 years at Foley's, an advertising agency, as a Production Artist. At 25, I moved to New York City where I lived for the next 20 years. I worked on Wall Street for Salomon Smith Barney and later for Lehman Brothers. While in NYC I picked up another degree at the New York Film Academy in Filmmaking.

Though she doesn't specify what her jobs were.

Chris Bowers on OpenLeft is less than impressed.
