US rockets slam into Afghan home, killing 12

MARJAH, Afghanistan (AP) - Two U.S. rockets slammed into a home Sunday outside the southern Taliban stronghold of Marjah, killing 12 civilians after Afghanistan's president appealed to NATO to take care in its campaign to seize the town.

"Our children are very scared by the explosions. When will it end?" asked Zaher, a 25-year-old poppy farmer who like many Afghans goes by one name.

The rockets were fired by a High Mobility Artillery Rocket System, or HIMARS, at insurgents who attacked U.S. and Afghan forces, wounding one American and one Afghan, NATO said in a statement. Instead, the projectiles veered 300 yards (meters) off target and blasted a house in the Nad Ali district, which includes Marjah, NATO added.

The top NATO commander in Afghanistan, Gen. Stanley McChrystal, apologized to President Hamid Karzai for "this tragic loss of life" and suspended use of the sophisticated HIMARS system pending "a thorough review of this incident," NATO said.

9. Most new missiles use GPS
I would say they put in 1 wrong number and the missiles hit right where they were progammed to go.

He just doesn't give a crap. They're the poor, third-world variety.

8. Yeah, now who's winning the big game?
I agree. We are blind, or numb, or distracted. Sports, movie stars, or missing hot chicks -no other issues are newsworthy.

13. Slap on the Opposite Test
Someone else's missiles, launched with the best of intentions at the worst members of our society, both veer off course (or so we're told) and annihilate a dozen people whose transgression was to get in the way of two errant rockets. I am confident that every American would be perfectly content with the apology, no one would get angry (only sorrowful), and we would have no one harbor any designs of revenge against the offending missile shooters.

Right?
