DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- A DeKalb County Parks & Recreation worker made a startling discovery Tuesday morning. The worker discovered a newborn girl in a backpack.

The backpack was sitting on a park bench, officials said.

It happened at about 9:45 a.m. at a park located near Bouldercrest Park Drive and Custer Avenue.

Investigators said the park worker noticed that the backpack was moving and went for a closer look.

The baby girl was taken to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston, where the newborn was said to be in good condition.

Authorities told Channel 2 Action News reporter Manuel Bojorquez that they are talking with officials at area high schools to see if any pregnant students may have abandoned the newborn.

1. Does Ga have a newborn surrender law to protect the mother
Edited on Tue Feb-16-10 09:39 PM by Ilsa
who wants to turn over a baby anonymously? In Texas, a mother can bring in a baby to a hospital or firehouse and maybe another kind of facility and not give her name or other birth information. The purpose of the law is to protect babies from being tossedinto dumpsters, etc.

2. They do, and it doesn't include park benches
The legal place to leave an unwanted infant up to one week old is a medical facility.
