3. I feel for the truly good eggs who want to get something done...
Can you imagine how depressing it is to be stuck between the con men and the wienies?

6. Hard to figure out what would be more annoying
The conman are actively trying to screw you - but the wienies are at least in their hearts trying to do the right thing, albeit in a weak and halfhearted way.

7. Yep. A handful are shouting into the wind. Trying to actually represent US
while the con artists (and I think the "spineless" thing is just cover) ignore them and go about business as usual. It's disgusting.

16. I agree.
It has to be hell in congress when you really want to get something done, but can't because of the nature of congress. One one side you have those with their hands out to every special interest group they can find, and on the other side you have people who just don't want to make waves! My personnel opinion is that it's the leadership that needs to be changed! Harry may be a nice guy, but as a leader nice guys just don't cut it! We need someone who can bring the party together and get thing done. Someone who can get tough and get votes. Now with all their faults, at least the republicans can make their party do what they want, even if it's childish and wrong, they stick together!

4. There is no unity in the Democratic Party as there is in the GOP
Democrats and their big tent means there is no unity.

This perception that the Democrats can't get anything done persists and it is the only reason there is a power cycle. If the Democrats were unified, the GOP wouldn't stand a chance.

10. About the only event that seems to unify just about everyone is war

Republicans figured that one out and use it every chance they get.

13. But once Obama decided to escalate the war in Afghanistan his true believers
Edited on Wed Feb-17-10 11:31 AM by Lorien
were suddenly pro war as well. So now there appears to be no issue that unifies us. The repugs, on the other hand, have many. They're all pro war, anti-tax and regulation, pro gun, anti worker, anti civil rights, anti environment, anti choice... when asked "what unites republicans?" one woman replied "we all hate the same things".

11. Yes, but that's because there is no longer any "democratic agenda"
because the DLC decided that the tent needed to be big enough to include Libertarians and Republicans. Even here on DU those who disagree with the GOP on various policies are called "liberal purists". Many DUers even despise being called either liberal or Progressive. Can anyone imagine a repug getting pissed off at the suggestion that they might be conservative? We don't toe the line because the DLC erased the line. We have no leadership because our appointed leaders don't want to take a stand on any issue for fear of losing a few of those libertarians and republicans. If we don't appear to believe in anything, then why would anyone with no party affiliation want to believe in us?

19. Wrong question. They are NOT "wienies". Calling them wienies implies that
they *want* to do the right thing but just aren't strong enough, or forceful enough, or tough enough. Anyone who's been paying attention and sees the writing on the wall can see, clear as day, that these people aren't doing anything because they're NOT INTERESTED IN DOING ANYTHING. THEY HAVE A VESTED INTEREST IN KEEPING EVERYTHING EXACTLY AS IT IS. Pleading impotence or insufficient votes is a handy deflect-all excuse. But now that Democrats have control of both houses of Congress AND the White House, they STILL DON'T DO ANYTHING. They're not wienies, they're just the same bunch of corporate whores the Republicans are.
