Government Recommends Stocking Up on Canned Tuna

Story Created: Mar 16, 2006 at 3:11 PM EST

(Story Updated: Mar 23, 2006 at 3:46 PM EST )

WASHINGTON, March 16 -- Got enough canned tuna on hand?

You should, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), which just published new recommendations encouraging consumers to prepare for the possibility of a bird flu outbreak by stocking up on canned tuna and other healthy, nutritious canned foods and juices.

In conjunction with the release of a new Pandemic Planning Update report issued on March 13, HHS has published a series of checklists to aid in influenza preparations, including a Pandemic Flu Planning Checklist for Individuals and Families.

Among the recommendations listed, HHS advises consumers to have adequate stores of canned tuna and other ready-to-eat meats, fruits, vegetables and soups as well as canned juices, bottled water, canned baby food and pet food.

Stating that no one in the world is prepared for an influenza pandemic, HHS Secretary Michael Leavitt said, "When you go to the store and buy three cans of tuna fish, buy a fourth and put it under the bed. When you go to the store to buy some milk, pick up a box of powdered milk. Put it under the bed. When you do that for a period of four to six months, you are going to have a couple of weeks of food, and that's what we're talking about."

Every time I see one, I wonder if Sadaam somehow got a few off and they finally just got here.

6. The problem is,
if you're trapped and start eating the tuna, how do you get to a doctor to get help for the mercury poisoning you just got from your emergency supplies?

17. Look on the bright side: No need for a thermometer to check your temp
Eat enough tuna and you ARE the thermometer.

7. Not much for canned tuna, but I did put some baked scrod and frozen shrimp under my bed in 2007
The stink finally went away last year.

11. No, my kitties threatened my life if I did not feed it to them.
I figured death by kitteh was more likely than death by flu, so I caved.

19. I gave all my tuna cans to the cats a long time ago. Comes in handy when you run out of cat food.

21. Mine get dry food set out all day, but I give them some canned food in the morning and evening.
They LOVE canned food, especially seafood varieties. If I run out and have any tuna that had been meant for me, they get it. If I am also out of tuna, I have been known to cook a chicken breast just for them rather than risk sleeping in a household of angry, plotting cats.

15. Why does it have to be under the bed?
And why do we have to put it there one can at a time?

Clearly Leavitt didn't care about people with waterbeds.

20. No, but the neighbors are wondering when I'll take the plastic sheeting and duct tape off the house.
It is starting to get a bit tattered.
