Dem says public option is 'within grasp' 16 Signatures so far

A liberal Democratic lawmaker on Thursday said that the public health insurance option could still be included in a final reform bill.

Rep. Keith Ellison (Minn.), a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC), said that the government-run plan is within grasp a day after 7 additional senators signed on to a letter calling for Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) to pass it through the Senate using the budget reconciliation process.

(snip)
House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.) said Thursday that the public plan "could very well be" reinserted into the final bill, the strongest statement yet from a Democratic leader.

Clyburn spoke after Democratic Sens. Diane Feinstein (Calif.), Roland Burris (Ill.), Al Franken (Minn.), Pat Leahy (Vt.), John Kerry (Mass.) and Sheldon Whitehouse (R.I.) signed the letter written by Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) and co-signed by Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) and Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio).

21. And the fact that he doesn't have to worry about reelection
The insurance corporations may have been given a green light by Opie Roberts to buy elections, but you can't run ads against a guy who's not running. (and doesn't have a wife in the insurance industry like Dodd or Bayh)

6. Wow, I am impressed. Some thought this was a "pie in the sky"
out of reach, type of goal, but I'm becoming hopeful. All it takes is the political will to stand up for what is right. I applaud these Senators for having the guts to support of the public option, which is what a lot of us have wanted. Keep 'em coming!!

18. It may not be
but it's a start. And we'll never know unless we try. Everyone needs to contact their Senators and tell them we want the public option.

8. OK, the "story" on Dodd.
He's out of the country "on official business" and is not very "accessible" for signing on to a Dear Colleague deal. He "hasn't decided" what he will do. I told the staffer I talked to that it is important that the people have a public option, cited his colleages that have signed on, stressed that I was a constituent (where I live, etc) and urged her to "pass it on" to the Senator asap.

I don't get it. Surely he can get an email with the content of the legislation if he wants to go over it. Surely he has stsffers who can go thru the thing on email or on his cellphone.

If I don't hear something in the next couple of days, I'm calling back. I actually got real live people up in his Hartford office on the phone. That's a good sign...

I urge my fellow Nutmeggers to do the same!

9. Absolutely. Business people find ways to sign docs remotely all the time --
by e-mail, fax, etc.

13. You are welcome. I am just puzzled that he didn't know about this before he left.
Edited on Thu Feb-18-10 01:11 PM by CTyankee
And that he is undecided??? Wasn't he in favor of the public option all along? What's he waiting for? After all, he's not running for reelection. I don't understand what the deal is...

On edit, I saw him on Morning Joe (in the studio in New York) Monday morning. He had to know about this thing coming down then...

14. and Lautenberg's been in the hospital
and still committed. Keep on calling and be persistent. About the only thing Dodd has to lose is a lobbyist job.

15. Is Lautenberg in bad shape or under meds so that he can't communicate
with his staff? I'm not being callous here, just wondering. I can understand if he is medicated since I was in the hospital for an extended time once and was in a fog from painkillers. If that is the case HE has an excuse. Don't really get Dodd's excuse...

17. he fell earlier this week
and now he's also recovering from stomach ulcers according to the last report I heard.

When calling senators about legislation this week, i gave his office a pass and decided to call Menendez instead.

Agree that Dodd has no excuse.

No wonder his poll #'s were pitiful here in CT.

12. I just sent an e-mail off to Mark Begich
urging him to sign on. I reminded him that the Republicans in Alaska are going to trash him anyway, so he may as well stand up and be a REAL Democrat. I've written to him two or three times before on this subject and haven't really gotten a clear picture of where he stands on the issue, but I guess it doesn't hurt to let him hear from me again.
