Terrorism in Austin?
Whoo. This morning there was an article in the Statesman on a housefire in north Austin off Parmer on a street called Dapplegrey. When I read that article, I didn't think that much of it, though it did seem to be a serious fire. That was about 9am here, Central time.

Then at 11:45 my power went out, and I knew it wasn't because of the heater because it wasn't running, so I got my cellphone and went outside to get my bearings and see what was what. I was just about to report the outage when a maintenance guy came out of the maintenance building and I asked him if I needed to report the outage and he said no because the outage was due to a small two-seat Cessna plane having crashed into a nearby building that just happened to house the IRS and FBI. Whoa. Then the power came back on and I was able to turn on the tv to local channels which were all reporting on this incident. Then I found out that the coverage has gone national, so you can watch it on CNN or MSNBC if you like.

Well.. it turns out that the crash is now linked to the housefire on Dapplegray. The news sources is saying that it began with a domestic disturbance that resulted in the guy setting fire to the house. Then the guy, Joseph Stack, went to Georgetown airport and stole the little plane and piloted it into Austin and crashed into the building. I guess the question is this. Was it an intentional terrorist act or just a suicide crash?

Anyhow, that's the story so far. Very sad, regardless of the scenario.

8. It was an intentional crash into the IRS building.
Turns out that the guy, Joseph Stack, had serious
financial issues and a history of contention with
and rage against the IRS.

His life had been going downhill for a long time,
and I think he had just gotten to the bottom: no
money and no job.

He had come to Austin to get work as a software
engineer and found nothing. In the suicide letter
he railed against Austin for not being really
interested in engineering when it should have
been.

Well, I don't really know about that. My nephew
works for Silicon Laboratories here in Austin as
a manager, but he's been there for quite a while.
He was a bit worried about downsizing a few years
ago, but since they were training him for more
managerial responsibility at the time, he thought
that meant that they liked him and would keep him
on... and they did. That company is well managed
through and through and doing well, by the way.

I'm glad this was an isolated incident by one
very upset and angry individual. I sympathize
with his reasons for being angry but not with
his ultimate destructive solution. Luckily
he didn't kill anyone else in the process, though
there were a couple of burn victims and that's
certainly bad enough.

7. A strange couple of days in Austin.
Yesterday it was reported that a rowing team (from Maine) who was here
doing some winter training on the downtown lake literally ran over an
already dead body floating in the lake.

It may turn out to be a homeless man who drowned or something. But it does
seem that Austin is under a dark cloud lately. And this city just seems like
the last place on earth to experience that sort of thing.
