Draft John Cougar Mellencamp movement starts
Facebook page now at 2,600 and climbing, in Indiana.

Mellencamp for U.S. Senate movement hits AP news story this morning:

Online drive seeks to draft Mellencamp for Senate

INDIANAPOLIS – An online effort to draft Hoosier rocker John Mellencamp to run for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Indiana's Democratic Sen. Evan Bayh is building up steam.

Twitter is abuzz with the rumor and three separate Facebook groups have been set up, with the largest boasting about 2,000 members.

Mellencamp is no stranger to politics. In 2008, he recorded a radio commercial supporting Barack Obama's presidential campaign and requested that Republican candidate John McCain stop playing his songs, including "Our Country" and "Pink Houses," at his rallies.

Mellencamp's songs often have political or social themes. He is a co-founder of Farm Aid.

On Thursday, Mellencamp spokesman Bob Merlis said the musician "has no statement to offer."

1. Can he get Little Pink House for you and Me?
Truthfully, I think he would win on sheer popularity.

11. Sometimes it takes more than one.
Ol' Johnny Cougar could be the first senator from Indiana who lives up to the values of RFK's Indianapolis speech.

We need to spread the word.

A DLC nominee means we lose the Hoosier seat.

Mellencamp means we win.

5. If he is reliably progressive on his platform, I'm happy if he runs.
Certainly better than letting the seat get captured by a right wing Democrat.

another corporate sponsored replacement. I'd love to see an outsider with progressive values (and star power) enter the race!

9. "corporate sponsored replacement"
A 5 to 4 Supreme Court decision already decided that.

Welcome to the Fourth Reich...

afaik.

kinda like the repugs did here in illinois 6 years ago, when 7-of-9's ex-husband was forced off the ballot by a scandal, the repugs chose alan keyes to run against obama for the open senate seat.

18. Alan Keyes was great for us! lol
I ran into that (scandal)guy a few years ago at a theatre fundraiser. He looked familiar to me & was gorgeous (waaaaaay prettier than Brown). I thought he was an actor. I asked him where I knew him from. He told me his name & I immediately remembered. Awkward! I asked what he was up to these days and he said he's the Editor of two newspapers now.

I can't believe I've forgotten his name.

12. Does he want to be a Senator?
Would he be any good at it?
Doesn't he just want to stay at home and paint?
Why do we need celebrities to run for office?
How about, you know, people who would be qualified for the job?
I'm sure if Mr. Mellencamp wants the job, he would be good at it.
But does he want the job?
This seems to be pretty silly.
It's like something Republicans would do...

13. Would he get nailed on smoking pot?
After all, he has done a lot of hanging out w/ Willie Nelson, and I believe Mr. Mellencamp inhaled a time or two.

15. I'm sure Palin will come in to campaign for John's opponent...
...and since Mellencamp organized Farm Aid with Willie Nelson she will claim he's just a community organizer and "pals around with pot smokers."

who's just to the right of Pinochet, Mellencamp sounds pretty good to me.
