My Kind of Town...
America's Most Miserable Cities 2010
Kurt Badenhausen, Forbes.com
Feb 18th, 2010

Cleveland leads a slew of Midwestern towns on our annual list, but thanks to high taxes New York and Chicago make it too.

The city of Cleveland has had a colorful history. The Cuyahoga River, which runs through the city, famously caught fire in 1969 thanks to rampant pollution, and it wasn't the first time. In 1978 it became the first U.S. city to default on its debts since the Great Depression. Cleveland sports fans have had to endure more anguish than those in any other city. The city has been dubbed with a less than endearing nickname: the Mistake by the Lake.

<snip>

Our most miserable city last year, Stockton, Calif., nabbed the second spot on this year's list. Unemployment and crime continue to be major issues. Stockton ranked seventh worst in both of these areas. Stockton residents have average commutes that are among the highest in the country and, like all Californians, they suffer from onerous sales and income taxes.

Stockton Mayor Ann Johnston says the city is working to fix its problems. It has seen a reduction in crime in recent months as it targets troubled areas with an increased police presence. On the economic front, the city recently expanded the Port of Stockton, which it hopes will attract new companies. Stockton is an agricultural community, but the Mayor says the city is working to diversify its economic base and echoes Silliman's comments about Cleveland. "We're an All-American city," says Mayor Johnston. "And it's not because we sit on our hands and do nothing. It's because we recognize our problems and work to solve them."

My "All American City" dropped from number 1 on the list to number 2, but we're planning a strong comeback for next year.

9. I live in Chicago, but can't say that I love the corrupt politicians, the chronic budget problems,
the wicked weather, or the highest sales tax in the nation. I do love the people I know here and my neighborhood.

6. tax rates and sports teams are big quality of life issues in this survey? weird.
i thought crime, lack of amenities, length of commute, lack of affordable housing, lack of jobs, crappy weather, and generally hostile populace should factor far, far, far more.

many of the list's cities i can understand, but some of the big ones, i cannot figure it out. Chicago, NYC, or Philadelphia would be nice, i think. but then i always disagreed with other surveys when they say Bumfucke, Empty Expanse County, Flyover State, USA (pop. <20,000 and shrinking!) is the best place to live and raise a family, too...

7. who makes these lists up? They said Holland Mi was one of the happiest
cities to live in...Holland Mi is a red state wet dream, full of Dutch reformed megachurches and angry teaparty people.

I would take Chicago over Holland in a second.

next, someone will say Wasilla AK is a great town to live in.

10. And that's your answer right there!
I looked at the list of cities, and they all happened to be pretty blue.......

Cleveland? There are some cities in Cuyahoga County that don't even have a Repug running in their Mayoral Elections (East Cleveland is the first to come to mind).

8. I AM SO FUCKING SICK OF CLEVELAND BASHING BY THE MEDIA!!!!
I imagine that none of these fucks have ever set foot in NE Ohio, much less Cleveland! And if they did, the assholes (knowingly) picked the 2 days in January predicted to have temperatures in the the 20s with windchills in the teens, stayed in their hotel room the whole time and pronounced the
entire city uninhabitable! They probably never even left the hotel bar!

And corruption? LIKE NO OTHER FUCKING CITY GOVERNMENT HAS CORRUPTION? Give me a break; I worked for City and County of Denver for 7 years; they just preferred to sweep their corruption under the carpet!

I'm not going to bother to go into all the wonderful things that Cleveland has to offer, cuz apparently M$M has had their minds made up for a long time, and nothing is gonna change their feeble, narrow minds!!
