Focusing on Plight of New Orleans Residents, ‘Reclaiming Our Land’ March Set for Saturday

Hundreds are expected to march on New Orleans Saturday, protesting a system they say is too slow and ineffective in responding to the needs of thousands of New Orleans residents driven from their homes in 2005 by the floodwaters of Hurricane Katrina.

“We’re bringing together the Congressional Black Caucus, the National Action Network, the SCLC and Rainbow PUSH to urge that the bureaucracy give way to the rapid release of resources to help these people,” the Rev. Jesse Jackson said in a conference call interview.

The “Reclaiming Our Land" march will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday near North Galvez and Jordan Street, where the breach occurred in the levee near the Ninth Ward.

“Katrina is a metaphor for abandoned urban America," Jackson said. "There is no urban policy, and there must be."
