Don't Cry for Me DC: Moscow struggles with 25 inch snowfall.
"Rail services unaffected by the weather." They 'won' this one!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/8529506.stm

Thousands of snow-clearing machines have been working to dig the Russian capital Moscow out of a record-breaking fall of 63cm (nearly 25 inches). After a weekend of heavy snow showers, the regional weather centre announced that the previous record of 62cm, set in 1966, had been broken.

Snow ploughs were due to make three clean sweeps of the city on Monday. Drivers were asked to leave their cars at home but rail services are said to have been unaffected by the weather. A Moscow railway spokesman said that 4,471km (2,778m) of track had been cleared of snow on Sunday.

In all, about 15,000 snow-clearing machines were deployed in the city of about 10.5 million people, backed by 8,500 dump trucks and about 5,500 street-sweeping personnel.

...
A police source told Interfax news agency that Muscovites had largely heeded calls to avoid driving and there had been no significant increase in traffic accidents.

Just hoping the run-off doesn't all end up on my basement floor.

Some things are worse than snow.

29. You haven't gotten any bills since 12/19? Lucky you.

That must be one advantage of living off the grid. :D

Too bad WV doesn't send everyone a nice big check, like Alaska. That would make the hardship almost bearable.

But, whatever you do, don't rent The Shining or let your wife watch any Kathy Bates movies!

such as Leninski Prospekt, Ulianova, and Tverskaia.

12. I can see patches of earth in my back yard in Annapolis
and the drifts against the fence are a lot smaller which means my greyhound doesn't walk up to the fence and put her feet up on it. Sadly, the DPW dump truck that broke its rear axle while cleaning the street is still parked in front of the house. But it does mean that any car coming from that direction will plow into it rather than our cars. The thing about the Moscow system is that most stations are underground - fewer than 10% are above ground. The DC metro system has a higher percentage of above ground stations. If I recall correctly they continued running underground service through the storms.

in SPB. Beautiful, but tiring.

18. It was weird how the sidewalks were never cleared and the ice built up to about
5 inches thick and looked like asphalt.

And instead of ploughing or salting streets they just threw dirt around.

Did they do that in St. Pete?

19. Ice was a big problem because it was generally warmer in St. Pete...
...being right on the gulf made it cold and wet instead of cold and dry, so there was a lot of cycles of slow melting/freezing, and the snow was easy to plow.

Old women with chippers would clear the sidewalks of ice, and they did a damn good job of it too...eventually.

I don't think there was ever salt, so they must have dumped gravel or dirt and plowed it.

Gah, I never thought I forget anything about those days...but I can't remember ever seeing a plow.

We had staplers at the office, but when I first got there, there was a huge shortage of envelopes. :wtf: I had to make my own to mail stuff.

24. Actually, I worked at a newspaper.
Our printing shop was generally very good -- high-quality printing, fairly good paper, excellent reproduction. We got Russian newspapers at the office and I don't remember having to cut them. But I do remember that every day brought another, different mild annoyance...one day, the phones didn't work. The next day, the police phones didn't work. The next day, the tax police threatened us. The next day, you come home to your apartment and it has a note on the door saying the hot water will be off for two weeks.

Loved every minute of it, though.

25. St. P Trib? I read Moscow Times and Trib regularly. I went to Moscow Times
offices a couple of times. I should have volunteered to work for them.

Before the Internet - 1993 - it was all we had....

26. When I was there, it was the St. Petersburg Press and then we were taken over by the Moscow Times
became the St. Petersburg Times. 1995-96.

The Times offices were a paradise compared to ours.

31. Downtown, mostly.
If you're willing to walk a kilometer or two to get to or from a station. In 25 inches of snow.

If that's fine and suits you, it's great. Otherwise, to the cars, trams, and buses.
