Newsweek: voters are looking for an 'outsider' (third party)
Eleanor Clift:
There’s a sense that politics as we know it could come apart this election season. With an unpopular war, scandals consuming the White House and a two-party system paralyzed by partisanship, voters are looking for an outsider, somebody who’s not tainted by politics as usual. If the two parties don’t satisfy this yearning with their nominees, there will be a third-party candidacy, maybe more than one.

I'd be curious where Eleanor got her information from. Which voters has she spoken with lately? With the Repubs drowning in scandal and ineptitude, does the media feel that promoting the Third Party option offers them a way to help trip up an obvious Democratic advantage for the foreseeable future? Does she seriously feel that Democrats have been equally 'tainted by politics as usual' as have repubs?

It's the fall of the GOP and the rise of the Dems. Pure and simple. We've reached that tipping point that we've all been desperately waiting for, I think. And nothing the Beltway says will change that.

go and read this morning's Glenn Greenwald post for the evidence. http://www.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/2007/04/28/sea_change/index.html

5. Desperate to impede the Democratic juggernaut.
An ultra-liberal third party candidate would be the only way for the Dems to lose.

She's admitting the Republicans have no one to run.

7. there are always about 10 parties on the ballot
only Nader, Perot, and Anderson drew a significant amount of votes in recent memory. For one thing, because Perot was made part of the debates.

I am not sure about the 'presumed Democratic advantage'. Somerby blasted that one recently too. Right now, polling shows all of our top three candidates - Clinton, Edwards, and Obama as losing to the top two Republicans Giuliani and McCain. I can guarantee that the west - Montana, Idaho, Utah, North Dakota, Alaska, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas will all vote Republican even if their candidate is Howdy Doody or Lincoln Chaffee. And probably I could add North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi. With Arkansas, Missouri, Virginia, Ohio, Colorado, and Florida being winnable as uphill battles.

What is a slam dunk for the Democrats? Massachusetts, Hawaii, Washington DC, and Illinois? States where we have a strong edge - California, Oregon, Washington, New York, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Connecticut, Maine, New Jersey, Delaware, Vermont, and New Hampshire. Some of those states were close even when Bush was the candidate. Motherfu$%ing Bush, for God's sake!!

Overly optimistic to think we have an edge.

8. Bullshit. The Beltway pundits must just be bored with the race thus far, but
I don't see a big outcry for a third party candidacy--and there is no one who is an "outsider". That's bullshit too. And who would want an "outsider" anyway, with no foreign policy experience? Foreign policy will be a big issue this time around, I predict.

9. That's why Big Media paints McCain as some sort of maverick...
...and Giuliani as a terrorist-fightin' hero. They can re-brand anyone they want.

13. It Means That They Are Going to Nader Us Again
Remember that for them to successfully Nader us,
it is not necessary that the 3rd party candidate actually get that many votes.
His role is to make the theft of an election that everyone expects us to win plausible.
