WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Obama administration is defending parts of a key anti-terror law against a Supreme Court challenge from humanitarian groups.
The administration is urging the court Tuesday to uphold the law's ban on providing support to foreign terrorist organizations designated by the State Department
even when it consists of training and advice about peaceful activities such as lobbying the United Nations. Solicitor General Elena Kagan said any aid to terrorist groups ''strenghthens them.''
The humanitarian groups says the law makes a crime out of speech, in violation of the Constitution.
David Cole, the lawyer for the aid groups and individuals, told the court that
the government has spent a decade arguing that ''our clients cannot advocate for peace.'' <snip>
