To the US media whining about wanting a presidential news conference

You will get to ask the president questions when the president decides you will get to ask him questions. Stop acting as if you entitled to this, you are not. The executive branch of the government has a huge operation to provide you with information and they do so every day. They do not have to even do that for you.

1. And
it wasn't that long ago the freaking media was whining about too many press conferences ruining their lovely prime time line up.
Screw em!

25. We have a winner! I will remain consistent. Our president works for us
it is way overdue for a press conference where he answerers questions.

5. Same thing I was thinking.
I mean, I could go into a lengthy thing here about the press being a vital part of democracy, of the press' being enshrined in the First Amendment, so important did the founding fathers consider it ... but, what'd be the point?

8. The president not taking direct questions from the media does not prevent an ongoing free
press.

13. The president not taking questions, nor even offering a press office, as you suggest...
would certainly have a chilling effect on the media. I want a more-open government, not less.

4. I do not need to hear my President speak to know that he is working for us
The media should focus on other things and not worry about when the President will talk to them. He will talk to them when it is something important.

28. That sounds like the recipe for dictatorship.
Mussoloni, Stalin, Hitler, all presented themselves as "working for the people," and millions were duped into granting them absolute power.

We are a democracy, and accountability is part of the basic foundation.

29. Right....Obama has already had more Press Briefings in one year than Bush* did in eight.
And the Press is complaining..Tells more about them than it does Obama.

7. Notice he hasn't done any since Lynn Sweet's little showboating question about Dr. Gates arrest
Indeed, as you said, there is only a right to free speech and free press, not a right to access to the president.

When the corporate media decides to start covering the news* fairly, then we can talk.

* "News" of course means NOT Tiger Woods latest sexcapades.

10. When people use the word whining, I stop listening.
Edited on Tue Feb-23-10 08:42 PM by asdjrocky
I've noticed it's become one of those words used to universally attack any argument.

Don't like DADT? You're a whiner. Upset about HCR, or the lack of it? Stupid whiner. Think it's not a bad idea for the President of the United States to stand before the press and answer questions more than once in a blue moon? Sit down, shut up and quit whining.

I think people that use the word whining again and again as a way to escape any real dialog are just assholing.

15. Hoo Boy! Some people can't see right vs. wrong they can only see right vs. left
I remember seeing this same crap on freerepublic. I thought left leaning people were smarter than this. The president regardless of party line should answer to the public and since the media represents the public he should answer to them.

Whats the point of voting a guy if he's going to stay hidden and do business in secret?

20. I'm sure you felt this way about Bush, too.
It amazes me how many people are willing to do a 180 and ignore-- or even praise-- acts by Obama that they would've condemned from Bush.

Then they go on to complain about Republican hypocrisy and wonder how they can't see their own double standards. It's almost funny.

The a president is the president, not a dictator or king and BTW, he works for US , and he answers to US.

24. he answers to us through the media. ALL presidents answer to the media.
Why do you think there is a White House Press Corp? Or don't you remember everyone complaining that they weren't tough enough on Bush? Jeez, this is beyond silly and uninformed. The President "owes" us information which we get through the media. That is why people like Helen Thomas and Rachel Maddie and others are important. How else will we know what our employee , the president is doing? The media is part of the Fourth Estate, amid is critical to the olperation of our government.

John Kennedy was a real master of the press conference and he know how important it was to his job.Perhaps if the president understood the art of dealing with the Fourth Estate, Healthcare would have had an easier time.

27. So, you think the government and its leaders should not be held accountable?
In democracies, they have to be.

You may not like the questions, but questions need to be asked.
