remember to wear black for the birthday of johnny cash and the day of bill hicks' passing.

America is a sadder place without these two giants and champions of the common man.

1. How about a black shirt for Johnny Cash?
Bill Hicks I don't care so much about. Sorry he died, but I don't miss him. I don't think I've ever laughed at a Bill Hicks 'joke'.

12. I respectfully disagree about Hicks
He criticized Reaganism when it was at the height of its popularity. He mercilessly tore apart the greed, shallowness and excessive corporatization that went with it. He was one of the only popular comics to come out against the first gulf war. And his scathing satire of Christian hypocrisy is still just as relevant today.

He used profanity not simply for the sake of cheap laughs, but as a shock technique to shake audiences out of their complacency.

19. If it worked for you, so be it
I don't like the sledgehammer approach. Or 'shock techniques'.

And really, how ground-breaking was it to criticize the President, or war, or Christian hypocracy? Carlin had been doing that through the 60's and Mort Sahl and Lenny Brooks were on the case before him. Plus, they were funny.

15. Love Bill Hicks
Sad he is gone so young, and that Dennis Leary stole his act from a dead man, who can't defend himself.

On his birthday, remember to drop a piano on Glenn Beck's head.
