Democracy, Easily Melted
Some dialog from the movie “Conspiracy”, a historical recreation of the 1942 Wannsee Conference. Consider this dialogue in the context of what is happening today.

Probably one of the most haunting movies I have ever seen. A typical ‘business’ meeting, with all the standard dynamics (grandstanding, arrogance, unreasonable demands), except they are talking about genocide.

Stuckart: It is very, very complex, these laws, a lot of time and thought has been put to them, and some of these here if you notice all the SS, they have little idea of what is lawful, and little respect for what they do know.

Kritzinger: To certain of these gentlemen, laws are like ice cream, easily melted.
discussing their suspicions of the purpose of the meeting

Heydrich: Now you have each been given some papers, these are for you alone, no copies to be made, not to be seen by others, or discussed with others, except superiors. How we deal with matters here must be held secret, we control events better when we control opinion. Today, each of us becomes a bearer of secrets.
stressing the need for secrecy at the beginning of the meeting.

Maj. Langer (standing abruptly): General, sorry, I have the real feeling I have evacuated 30,000 Jews already by shooting them at Riga. Is what I did evacuation? When they fell, were they evacuated? There are another 20,000 at least waiting for similar evacuation. I just think it is helpful to know what words mean. With all respect.

Heydrich (after pause): Yes, in my personal opinion they are evacuated.

Kritzinger (agitated): Explain!

Heydrich: I have just done so.

Kritzinger: That is . . . no, that is contrary to what the Chancellery has been told. I have directly been assured, I have . . . purge the Jews, yes, but to annihilate them . . .that we have undertaken to systematically annihilate all the Jews of Europe, no no no, that possibility has personally been denied, to me, by the Fuhrer!

Heydrich (after pause): And it will continue to be.

Kritzinger (walks away from table, long pause): Yes, I understand. . . . Yes, he will continue to deny it.
Kritzinger finding out that he has been working for psychopaths

Heydrich: I am not trying to rewrite your law, but I am invoking Fuhrer’s Prinzip, his word, is above all written law.
telling Stuckart the basis for overruling of the Nuremberg race laws.

And then there’s this.

Conservatives Endorse the Fuhrer Principle

1. Vaulting the propaganda:

Heydrich (after pause): Yes, in my personal opinion they are evacuated..."

Just substitute "liberated" for "evacuated" and we have the Bush Doctrine of 'spreading democracy'.

2. I wish I knew what democracy was. They say they keep spreading it, but
all I see is death, destruction, theft, and oppression. Is that democracy?

3. Our boys have definitely mastered the techniques ...

... even if they haven't scaled their goals to a directly equivalent degree of horror.

I was just thinking today that any single email documenting "secret plans" and political manipulation should be considered sufficient proof with these guys, because you're going to be damn lucky to find any traces. Further, a mound of direct evidence shouldn't be necessary as any evidence should be sufficient when coupled with documented claims of Rove et al working to create a permanent Republican majority.

---

"evacuated 30,000 Jews by shooting them ... I just think it is helpful to know what words mean." -- Yes, one must know what words mean in order to know how to manipulate them in your propaganda. See: Healthy Forests = Clear-cutting; Clear Skies = increased pollution (clearing skies of birds, I suppose), etc.

This exchange, I'm sure, has been a regular within the Bush Executive Branch...
Kritzinger: "... that possibility has personally been denied, to me, by the Fuhrer!"
Heydrich (after pause): "And it will continue to be."

And then there's those pesky "signing statements"...
Heydrich: I am not trying to rewrite your law, but I am invoking Fuhrer’s Prinzip, his word, is above all written law.

p.s. Bob Barr is lucky to have escaped CPAC with his life. "The CPAC audience answered that they preferred to be governed by Bush."

p.p.s. Paul Craig Roberts was Assistant Secretary of the Treasury in the Reagan administration. He was Associate Editor of the Wall Street Journal editorial page and Contributing Editor of National Review. -- Wow, that was a surprise.

4. All it took was a regime willing to ignore the Constitution, a Congress willing to let them ignore
the Constitution, a Congress in place to do whatever they were told to do with no oversight at all, have all Depts staffed by loyal Bushies, courts stacked with loyal Bushies and a CORPORATE OWNED willing press. Easy peasy. It only took 6+ years to tear it all apart. EASILY MELTED.
