2. bad value if you're the one paying for it.
BTW, we're talking brain buckets for F-35 fighter pilots. F-35/fighter should be classified as an oxymoron.

F-35 Gen II HMDS
Joint Strike Fighter Helmet Mounted Display System

VSI has developed a state-of-the-art Helmet Mounted Display System (HMDS) for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF). Our F-35 Gen II HMDS provides critical flight information to the pilot throughout the entire mission profile, fully utilizing the advanced avionics architecture of the F-35. HMDS projects the night vision scene directly onto the helmet visor, providing a fully integrated day or night solution that enhances situational awareness and tactical capability.

The F-35 Gen II HMDS is a biocular off-the-visor display providing the pilot with a wide field-of-view video/symbology image to both eyes. It offers next-generation technology in a compact, versatile and extremely rugged display with low power consumption. The HMDS’ custom helmet shell, liner and suspension system offer users a light weight, optimal center-of-gravity (C.G.) and maximum comfort solution. By virtue of precise head tracking capability and low latency graphics processing, it provides pilots with a virtual Head-Up Display (HUD). As a result, the F-35 is the first tactical fighter jet in 50 years to fly without a HUD.

F-35 HMDS features include:

* Virtual HUD
* Biocular 40° x 30° FOV
* Video Display
* AMLCD Image Source
* High Accuracy Opto-magnetic Tracker
* Adaptive Tracking – no Mapping or Boresighting required
* Integrated Line-of-Signt (LOS) Cueing
* Integrated left & right upper Reticles (Puppers)
* Integrated Day/Night Debrief Camera
* Sensor Fusion
* Ejection Safe to 600 KEAS
* Custom helmet shell, liner and suspension system for lightest weight, optimal C.G. and maximum pilot comfort

things have changed a lot since World War 2.
There is a lot of technology crammed in today's equipment, and it has to be 'hardened' to be reliable under the worst conditions possible. That ain't cheap.

5. Sounds like a bit more than a simple helmet
"When pilots look down, they see the view under the aircraft. A glance to each side also shows them the view outside the aircraft..."

Plus, what's the military's investment in a pilot by the time they're flying the latest and greatest? I'd spend whatever it took to protect that well-trained brain.

9. But why in the world would you stick a well trained pilot into an F-35 in the first place?
$239 million, hasn't flown above 40,000 feet, missing almost 1/2 it's scheduled flight tests and we're still not sure about the engine.

The F-35 is just another symptom of the M-I-C gone wild.

12. At some point you have really ask What is it that we are protecting?
People losing their homes, 1 out of every 4 children living in households that use Food Stamps, health care nightmares (literally dying because your job/ income attatched to being able to access a Doctor), cuts in education, infrastructure that is old and crumbling... What are we protecting.. not the American people.. that's a lie.

there is always going to be wars whether you like it or not, its the nature of mankind to break off into tribal units and then kick the living shit out of other tribes, as it has been so it shall be..

19. Hardly a "brain bucket"
That's basically a state-of-the-art electronics suite shoehorned into a helmet. If you're operating a jet aircraft at the edge of its performance envelope you need every bit of edge you can get.
