things have changed a lot since World War 2.
There is a lot of technology crammed in today's equipment, and it has to be 'hardened' to be reliable under the worst conditions possible. That ain't cheap.

$239 million, hasn't flown above 40,000 feet, missing almost 1/2 it's scheduled flight tests and we're still not sure about the engine.

That's basically a state-of-the-art electronics suite shoehorned into a helmet. If you're operating a jet aircraft at the edge of its performance envelope you need every bit of edge you can get.
